Bertilla "Tootie" Andersen, 89 of Arcadia, died Monday, Jan. 6, 2014, at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 10, 2014 at St. John Catholic Church in Arcadia. The celebrant will be Father Gary Snyder. Concelebrant will be Father Richard Remmes. Music will be by Darlene Leiting and the St. John choir. Lector for the Mass will be Mary Andersen. Gift bearers will be Sarah Swanson, Andrea Lawler, Jennie Andersen and Maddie Andersen. Casket bearers will be: Sarah Swanson, Ben Andersen, Andrea Lawler, Ryan Lawler, Jennie Andersen, Mike Andersen and Maddie Andersen. The St. John Ladies Guild and Arcadia American Legion Auxiliary will form an honor guard for the Mass. Burial will be at St. John Cemetery in Arcadia.
Friends may call after 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll where there will be a rosary by St. John Ladies Guild at 4 p.m. and a Christian wake service at 6:30 p.m. by St. John Parish.

Born March 15, 1924, at Arcadia, Iowa, Bertilla was a daughter of Peter and Mary (Hugeback) Schmitz. She spent her entire lifetime in the Arcadia area and attended St. John School. On June 4, 1946, she married Leon Andersen at St. John Church in Arcadia with Father Mathias Stork officiating.
The couple farmed in the Arcadia area for seven years and then moved to town where Tootie worked as a bookkeeper for Schmitz Implement and later for Andersen Parts and Service. She then worked for 34 years in the U.S. Post Office retiring on July 31, 1987, as postmaster. Tootie was a member of St. John Parish, Parish Ladies Guild, and the Arcadia American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include her children: Jim Andersen and his wife Mary of Denison, Kathy Lawler and her husband Greg of Aurora, Ill., Nancy Schmitz and her husband Dale of Arcadia, John Andersen and friend Shelli Peck of Ames; her grandchildren: Sarah Swanson, Ben Andersen, Andrea Lawler, Ryan Lawler, Jennie Andersen, Mike Andersen and Maddie Andersen; her great-grandchildren: Alyssa, Brennan and Camdyn Swanson, and Lyncoln Andersen; her sisters: Marie Speyer and Norma Berger, both of Carroll; her sisters-in-law: Alice Schmitz of Arcadia, Florence Schmitz of Carroll and Ruth Andersen of Arcadia; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives.
Tootie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leon, in 2005; and her siblings: Florentine Rupiper, Agnes Rupiper, Lawrence Schmitz, Lewis Schmitz and Leo Schmitz.
