Beulah J. Onken, 86, of Carroll and formerly of Lidderdale, passed away Saturday, Feb. 22, 2014, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 26, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lidderdale with Pastor William Weiss officiating.
Organist for the service will be Rebecca Dose. Casket bearers will be Tony Heinrichs, Tom McClue, Ross Onken, Kent Kellen, Justin Kellen and Grant Bettin.
Burial will be at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery near Lidderdale.
Friends may call after 5 p.m. Tuesday at Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll, where there will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday when visitation will resume. Born March 19, 1927, on her family's farm near Lake View, Iowa, she was a daughter of Abel and Sarah (Jackson) Peters. She attended country school near the farm where she grew up, east of Lake View. Following her schooling she worked on her dad's farm several years. Beulah married Lyle Onken on Nov. 11, 1945, at the Lutheran Church near Lake View. Lyle was in the Navy so the couple moved to Vallejo, Calif., where he was stationed. They moved back to Lidderdale in 1946. Beulah was a homemaker until her children were raised and then went to work for the U.S. Postal Service for 13 years, ending up as the postmaster of Ralston retiring in 1990. She moved to Carroll in 2010.
Beulah was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lidderdale where she served on the altar guild, LWML and Ladies Aid. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed traveling, gardening, cooking and spending time with her family.
Beulah is survived by four daughters: Karen Johnson of Carroll, Kathy Heinrichs and her husband Paul of Carroll, Debbie Ludwig and her husband Eldon of Carroll, and Marcia Mitchell of Carroll; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; two sisters Marjorie Reinhart of Carroll and Evelyn Fredrichs and her husband Don of Wall Lake; a brother Roger Peters and his wife Rita of Lake View; a brother-in-law Wes Bettin of Owatonna, Minn.; a brother-in-law Doyle Onken and his wife Karen of Jamaica, Iowa; a brother-in-law Wally Onken and his wife Madge of Lidderdale; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Beulah was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Lyle in 1980; three sons: James, Ronald and Michael; a sister LaVerna Bettin; a brother Jimmy Peters; three grandsons: Lance Williamson, Benjamin Ludwig and Shane Ludwig; and three sons-in-law: Gary Blakenship, Rod Johnson and Ian Mitchell.
