Bonita Sloss Betts, 89, of Guthrie Center, Iowa, passed away from a battle with cancer on Saturday, May 10, 2014, surrounded by family at New Homestead in Guthrie Center.

Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, at First Christian Church, 105 N. Fourth St., Guthrie Center with Pastor Denis James officiating.

Casket bearers will be Angie Stokes, Jennifer Chirsty, Jody Longston, Amy Berger, Eric Betts, Ryan Betts, Rick Sparks, Chris Betts, Nathan Betts, Randy Sparks and Rob Sparks.

Butial will be at Union Cemetery in Guthrie Center.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, at Twigg Funeral Home, 506 Prairie St., Guthrie Center.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to First Christian Church or to the family for the charities of their choice.

Bonita was born Sept. 19, 1924, in Guthrie County to Robert and Pearl Sloss.

Family and friends were what mattered most to Bonita. A teacher at age 16 after attending country school and graduating from Guthrie Center High School, she married Rolland Betts in 1944. Bonita raised a family and helped Rolland with farming on their Guthrie County farm before the couple retired and moved to town in 1992.

Bonita is survived by five children, Karen (Bill) Sparks of Guthrie Center, Darwin (Connie) Betts of Carroll, Lynn (Candy) Betts of Johnston, Leslie (Suzette) Betts of North Liberty and Jeanne (Ron) Logston of Ames; three sisters, Lillian Wilson, Darlene Cue and Gladys DeWitt; sister-in-law Beverly Betts; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was preceded in death by the love of her life, Rolland Betts; her parents, Robert and Pearl Sloss; brother Merle; and sister Kathleen.
