Speck was born Oct. 30, 1923, at Breda, Iowa, to Anton and Helena (Neppl) Bachman. He received his first eight years of education in a country school, and in the spring of 1937 he went one year to high school. After that he helped his dad on the farm until he was drafted into the Army in 1944. Speck and his five brothers all served in the military during World War II and the Korean War.

Speck met his future wife, Helen Kelly, in 1942, and they were married Sept. 24, 1945, after the war. In 1953, Speck and Helen had a daughter, Bonnie and later a son, Joe.

Speck was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Auburn, and was also a 68-year member of the American Legion. He was a good, but careful, provider for his family.

Speck is survived by his wife, Helen, of Auburn; daughter, Bonnie (Paul) Hasenwinkel, of Auburn; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and his brothers, Ott, Ed, Duane and Jim Bachman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, son Joe, sisters Marilyn Bachman and Delores Koster, and brother Raphael Bachman.
