Donald Schrad, 81, died Tuesday, July 30, 2013, at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital in Lake City.

Mass of the Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 2, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Auburn. Celebrant will be Father Lynn Bruch, and burial will be at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Auburn with military honors by Auburn American Legion Post 284.

Donald Henry Schrad was born Aug. 25, 1931, in Lake City, Iowa, to A. Louis and Anna (Meyer) Schrad. He graduated from Auburn High School in 1949, then served in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954. He was stationed in Germany for 18 months during the Korean War. On Jan. 3, 1975, Don married Kathryn Smith in Jefferson, Iowa.

He worked as a farmer and at the FC Co-op for 20 years. Don was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Auburn and the Auburn American Legion.

Don is survived by his wife, Kathryn Schrad, of Lake City; stepson Glenn (Meredith) Smith of Urbandale; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; brother-in-law Ralph Winker of Carroll; sisters-in-law Donita Schrad of Lake City and Ruth Schrad of Auburn; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, stepdaughter Gayla Klimesh, brothers Lloyd and Arlo Schrad, and sisters Hilda Winker and Evelyn Schrad.
