Donald W. Bernholtz, 84, died Tuesday, April 23, 2013, at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital in Lake City.

Mass of the Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 26, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Lake City with Father Lynn Bruch officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. with a parish rosary at 5 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m. Thursday at Lampe Funeral Home in Lake City.

Donald William Bernholtz was born Jan. 13, 1929, in Carroll, Iowa, to Edward and Mary Catherine "Mayme" (Schleisman) Bernholtz.

On June 20, 1950, Don married Beverly Schwartz at St. Mary Catholic Church in Auburn, and he served in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1957. Don worked for Dr. McVay on his farm before starting to farm on his own. Although he retired in 1997, he never really quit farming. He always liked to keep track of area farmers, and he died a farmer at heart. Don loved God first, and no one loved their family more than Don. He enjoyed cooking and loved to share what he made with others, and he spent many hours watching NASCAR and rodeo. Don was a member of St. Mary Parish, Holy Name Society, VFW, American Legion, and was a past Saddle Club member.

Donald is survived by his wife, Bev Bernholtz of Lake City; children Susie (Daryl) Reiling of Carroll, Tom (Darel) Bernholtz of Denison, Ann (Jeff) Wenck of Lidderdale and Kris (Scott) Bender of Spencer; 12 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and sisters Doris Determan of Jeffers, Minn., and Mary (Darrell) Heuton of Colorado City, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Mayme Bernholtz; son and daughter-in-law Steve (Casey) Bernholtz; sister Esther Galbraith; and brother Duane Bernholtz.
