Dorothy Newland Miller, 94, died Monday, July 8, 2013, at Shady Oaks Care Center in Lake City.

Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Friday, July 12, at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery in Lake City with Father Lynn Bruch officiating. Military honors will be provided by Lake City American Legion Post 31 and the Lake City VFW Post 1899.

Lampe Funeral Home in Lake City is in charge of arrangements.

Dorothy was born the oldest of seven children on Oct. 30, 1918, at Wadena, Minn., to John and Ida (Busche) Tigges. She served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1945 and was married to Francis A. Newland in 1946 at Wadena. Francis died on April 11, 1968. She married Wendell Miller on Jan. 29, 1972, and Wendell died May 28, 1979. Dorothy worked as a nurse's aide at McVay Hospital, and she also worked at Super Valu and the Conrad Motel in Lake City. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Lake City, the Lake City VFW and Ladies Auxiliary. She raised four boys and maintained a good family home.

Dorothy is survived by her sons Mike (Carol) Newland of Lake City, Denny Newland of Port Townsend, Wash., Joe Newland of Urbandale, and Ed Newland of Shakopee, Minn.; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; sister Jenny (Dr. Bill) Zavaneli of California; and brother John (Yvonne) Tigges of Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Francis Newland in 1968, husband Wendell Miller in 1979, four sisters and one brother.
