Dr. William "Bill" Edward Erps, 89, of Carroll, died Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2013. at Regency Park Nursing Home in Carroll.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at St. John Lutheran Church in Carroll with the Rev. Cindy Johnson officiating.

Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Friday at Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll where there will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 a.m. Saturday when visitation will resume. Organist for the service will be Jan Potthoff, vocalist will be Jeff Hughes singing "Going Home" and congregational hymns will be "Eagles Wings" and "Precious Lord Take My Hand." Casket bearers will be Jennifer Harding, Michael Erps, Heather Wagner, Kayla Erps, Amanda Erps, Connor Erps and Brody Erps.

Burial will be at the Arcadia Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Arcadia American Legion.

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers memorials be made to St. Anthony Hospice or St. Anthony Regional Hospital and may be left at the funeral home or the church.

Born at home one-half mile east of Arcadia on March 1, 1924, he was a son of Edward O. and Ellen (Axford) Erps. William attended Arcadia High School and graduated in 1941. He did farm work, drove trucks and worked road construction until going into the Army Air Corps from 1943 to 1946 as a B-24 bomber mechanic.

William graduated from Buena Vista College in 1950 and married Leona Meyer the same year. William taught school at Grimes and Aurelia, Iowa, prior to attending the University of Iowa College of Medicine, graduating with an M.D. degree in 1958. Following his internship in Des Moines, except for five years in Colorado and two in Remsen, William was a family physician in the Storm Lake area. He was a member of county medical societies, the Academy of Family Practice, the American Medical Association and American Legion Post 694 in Arcadia.

His wife Leona died in 1988. He married Kathryn Hawks on July 25, 1990. After retiring in 1999, he and Kathryn moved to Carroll.

William loved his wife, children and family, the medical profession, and ballroom dancing. He appreciated and enjoyed gatherings with his friends. He was grateful for the chance to go to medical school, having a great immediate and extended family, and for living and working in the great state of Iowa.

William is survived by his wife Kathryn; two daughters Diane Erps of Wheat Ridge, Colo., and Doreen Wyatt of Englewood, Colo.; three sons: Donald Erps and his wife Julie of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Douglas Erps and his wife Brenda of Grimes, Iowa, and David Erps and his wife Jalyn of Lyons, Colo.; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; his stepchildren Ed Hawks and his wife Jane of Underwood, Iowa, Kay Flemmer and her husband Dwight of Polk City, Iowa, and Gayle Coon and her husband Scott of Manning, Iowa; six step-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren; two sisters: Elaine Berge and her husband Cal of Carson City, Nev., and Ruth Buddenhagen and her husband James of Humboldt; a brother Robert Erps and his wife Wanda of Arcadia; and several nieces and nephews.

William was preceded in death by his parents Ellen and Edward, a sister Lois Hill and two infant grandsons.
