Duane "Dewey" C. Neppl, 74, died unexpectedly Friday, March 14, 2014, at Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison.
Mass of the Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, March 18, at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Denison with burial at the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, March 17, at Huebner Funeral Home in Denison where there will be a Legion of Mary rosary at 4:30 p.m. and a scriptural prayer service at 6 p.m.
Duane "Dewey" C. Neppl was born in Carroll, Iowa, on July 16, 1939, a son of Christopher William and Mary Matilda Rutten Neppl. He was raised on the family farm south of Denison. He attended country school in the Coon Grove area and also attended Vail High School.
On Nov. 26, 1960, Duane married Janice T. Eischeid at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Roselle, Iowa. Their union was blessed with five children: Patricia, Carlene, Chris, Bryan and Albert.
Duane and Janice first made their home north of Vail, then Manilla, and finally in the Denison area. Duane was involved in farming through 1980. He worked in sales with Pender Silo company, and then with the Des Moines Register. He began his farm-machinery sales career with Schenkelberg Implement John Deere, he also worked for Vetter's Implement -International Harvester, New Holland in Carroll, and the Harvester Silo Company. He began working for the U.S. Post Office as a rural mail carrier in 1976. He retired from the Post Office in 2004.
Duane, or "Dewey," as he was known by many, was always involved in collecting and selling farm toys, making many acquaintances along the way. Dewey also enjoyed reading on just about any topic but particularly his newspapers and about tractors, toys, trains and the national parks. No one was a stranger to Dewey as he would quickly strike up a conversation with anyone he met. He and Janice attended many events of their children and grandchildren. He will be remembered by his family as a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was a member of the St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, Iowa and National Rural Letter Carriers Associations, and the Crawford County Fair Board.
He is survived by his wife of over 53 years, Janice Neppl of Denison; daughters: Patricia and husband Kevin, Carlene and husband Brad Chris and wife, Renee, Bryan and wife Amanda of and Albert and wife Gloria, Iowa; 13 grandchildren: Mitch (Mandy), Erika, Trisha (fiancé Matt), Travis (Ashley), Trevor (Danielle), Carson, Lucas, Camryn, Ava, Ashlynn, Joshua, Cole and Collin; five sisters: Lucille, Maxine, Marian, Esther and Virginia; three brothers: Lavern and wife Lorraine, Clarence and wife Donnie, Leon and wife Betty; sisters-in-law Jean (Urban), Iowa, and Clara Ann (Elmer); brother-in-law, Cliff and wife Jean; sisters-in-law Ruthann and husband Ray, Velma and husband Duane, Verena and husband Romen, Lenora and husband Vincent, and Arlene all of Carroll, Iowa; Alberta and husband Wilferd, Therese and husband Dale; nieces, nephews other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Christoopher and Mary Neppl; two brothers, Urban and Elmer; brothers-in-law; John (Lucille), Ken (Maxine), Ernest (Marian), George (Esther), Donald (Virginia), Marvin (Elsie); and sisters-in-law Delores and (Walten), Marion (Melvin).
