Edwin Norman Reiter, 83, of Wall Lake, died Friday, May 31, 2013, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, June 3, at Peace Lutheran Church in Wall Lake, with the Rev. Roger Carlisle officiating. Burial will be at Wall Lake Cemetery with military graveside rites by the American Legion Chalon Post 262 of Wall Lake.
Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Wall Lake is in charge of arrangements.
He was born in Carroll County, near Westside, Iowa, on Nov. 20, 1929, a son of Norman and Margaret (Aden) Reiter. He was baptized and confirmed in the Presbyterian faith. He grew up north of Vail, attended Levey Township 8 Country School and graduated from Wall Lake High School in 1947. He attended Morningside College for a year before enlisting in the U.S. Air Force on Dec. 29, 1950. He earned the rank of staff sergeant on April 1, 1954. Ed was awarded the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal when he was honorably discharged Nov. 30, 1954.
Ed married Joanie Grundmeier on May 31, 1959, at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning, Iowa. They made their home in Wall Lake where they raised their family. Ed worked for several farmers and then worked at Reiter Feed Company, retiring in 1995.
Ed enjoyed woodworking and being involved with the community. He served on the board at Twilight Acres Nursing Home, served as school board president and was elected mayor of Wall Lake. As a member of Peace Lutheran Church he taught Sunday school and served in many capacities. Ed was currently serving as president of the Lutheran Laymen Sac Circuit. He was very proud to be a member of the American Legion. He served in many positions in Wall Lake, the 9th District and on the state level. Ed was 9th District commander and Iowa Department commander from 1999-2000. Some of his other roles included State Legion Baseball, Iowa Boys State, Iowa Legion Foundation, Boy Scout leader, member of the Elderbridge Agency in Wall Lake, and co-chairman of the Wall Lake Alumni Association.
Ed was a loving husband, father, grandfather and brother. He cherished his family.
Survivors include his wife, Joanie; children: Curtis Edwin Reiter of Ankeny, Russell Alan Reiter of Oskaloosa, Iowa, Amy Sue (Christopher) Morley of Dunkerton, Iowa, and Kathleen Ann (James) Drapp of Seffner, Fla.; grandchildren: Aaron (Cindy) Morley, Rachel (Sam) Barnes, Steven Morley, Bailee Reiter, Emilee Reiter, Adam Reiter, Alexander Drapp, Holly Drapp, Ryan Reiter and Nicholas Reiter; great-grandson Kaiden Morley; his brothers: Richard "Dick" (Joann) Reiter of Wall Lake and Robert (Rebecca) Reiter of Bettendorf, Iowa; many extended family members and a host of friends.
Ed was preceded in death by his parents, Margaret and Norman; and sister Mary Margaret, in infancy.
