Elmer Bluml, 86, of Carroll, died Wednesday, Sept. 4, 2013, at the Carroll Health Center Nursing Home in Carroll.

Mass of the Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll. The celebrant will be Father Lawrence McCarty. Music will be by Marcy Anderson and the St. Lawrence choir with Shari Schulte and Cyndi Loneman as song leaders. Lector for the Mass will be Michael Henkenius. Gift bearers will be Elmer's grandchildren Hailey, Jack and Emma Bluml. Eucharistic ministers will be Ann Christiansen, Jean Knobbe and Lynette Lehrter. Casket bearers will be Elmer's sons Mark Bluml, Jeff Bluml, Joel Bluml, and Elmer's grandsons Andrew Bluml, Eric Lampe and Jack Bluml. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Carroll with military honors conducted by the Carroll American Legion.

Visitation will begin at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll where there will be a rosary at 4 p.m. and a Christian wake service at 7 p.m. by St. Lawrence Parish. The casket will be moved to St. Lawrence Church at 9 a.m. Saturday when visitation will resume.

Born April 21, 1927, at Halbur, Iowa, Elmer Frank Bluml was a son of Joseph and Frances (Wittrock) Bluml. He attended St. Augustine School in Halbur and then enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving during the Korean War. On June 1, 1954, Elmer married Bernice Berger at Annunciation Church in Coon Rapids, Iowa. The couple made their home in Carroll, and Elmer had a 42-year career with Chicago and North Western Railroad in the building and bridge department. He enjoyed gardening, "making the rounds," playing cards, watching the Cardinals and tolerating the Cubs. His greatest joy was his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Elmer was a member of St. Lawrence Parish and Carroll American Legion Maurice Dunn Post 7.

Survivors include his wife Bernice of Carroll; his children: Mark Bluml and wife Lori of Carroll, Mary Lampe and husband Rick of Fair Grove, Mo., Jeff Bluml of Fort Dodge, and Joel Bluml and wife Melissa of Topeka, Kan.; 10 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his sisters: Ardella Irlbeck of Templeton, Ardith (Albert) Sturm of Manning, Charlene Stork of Glidden and Margaret Hinners of Manning; his brothers: Glen (Sharon) Bluml of Hawarden and Don (Carol) Bluml of Dubuque; his sisters-in-law: Faye Bluml of Carroll, Leona Seidl of Coon Rapids, Frances (Albert) Meiners of Coon Rapids, Virginia Berger of Carroll and Dorothy Berger of Lohrville; brothers-in-law, Louis Odendahl of Manning and Edmond "Butch" (LaVonne) Berger of Lidderdale; and many nieces, nephews and other extended relatives.

Elmer was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters: Delores Odendahl and Estherlyn Rohe; and his brothers: Jerry Bluml, Larry Bluml and James Bluml.
