Elmer was born April 13, 1919, in rural Carroll County, Iowa, to the late John and Anna (Niehaus) Staiert. He married Antonette Pudenz of Carroll on January 7, 1941, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Auburn. Elmer graduated from St. Francis Catholic School in Maple River, Iowa in 1933. During his youth, he worked for his father on the family farm and others in the community. After marriage, Elmer and Antonette farmed in the Auburn, Breda and Fonda areas for eight years. In 1949, they bought a farm south of Fonda where they lived for 50 years and raised livestock and grain crops. He had a passion for raising cattle and always proudly covered plates with his juicy steaks.
Elmer and Antonette belonged to a square-dance club, loved polka music and enjoyed playing cards with their family and friends. Elmer had a talent for woodworking, remodeled several family homes, liked cabinet making and made a grandfather's clock that was his pride and joy. Starting in 1977, they vacationed in Florence, Ariz., every winter for 22 years. Elmer retired from farming in 1991 and moved to Sac City in December 1999. He enjoyed following the Minnesota Twins on television, liked watching football and loved tapping his toes to the Saturday night polka music. Later in life, he became interested in gardening, especially growing onions and roses. Elmer was a member of the Our Lady of Good Council Church and the Knights of Columbus in Fonda and later the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Sac City.
Elmer is survived by his wife of 72 years, Antonette, along with 6 children, 18 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren, all of whom he dearly loved. His surviving children are Judy (Bill) Oldham of Hereford, Ariz., Marjean (Leonard) Higby of Gering, Neb., Carolyn Peed of Temecula, Calif., Janice Staiert of Sac City, Iowa, Barbara (Richard) Ingold of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Gary (Tammy) Staiert of Bennet, Neb.; his siblings, Hilda Bruch, Ethel (Ray) Reiff, and Leo (Alice) Staiert, all of Carroll; sisters-in-law, Harriet Staiert of Centennial, Colo., Alice Staiert of Carroll, Ella Mae Staiert of Harlan, and Sally Carroll of Titusville, Fla.; and brothers-in-law Norman Pudenz and Leon Pudenz of Carroll.
