Ferne Wittrock, 90, of Carroll, died Friday, Aug. 30, 2013, at Shady Oaks Nursing Home in Lake City, Iowa.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3, at Carroll City Cemetery.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of the Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll, and online condolences may be left for Ferne's family at www.sharpfuneral.com. Memorials may be left in Ferne's name to the Alzheimer's Association, www.alz.org.
Born Sept. 25, 1922, at Carroll, Iowa, Ferne was a daughter of Harry and Emily (Kotos) Graves. Ferne spent her younger years on her parents farm near Glidden, Iowa. She attended Drake University and worked for American Airlines in New York City and Phoenix Ariz. Ferne married Louis Wittrock and the couple raised five boys: Scott, Charles, Curtis, Richard and Philip. In addition to caring for her family she also worked at Carroll Health Center nursing home. Ferne was active in the League of Women Voters in Carroll. Ferne loved gardening, cooking, especially baking and pies, playing bridge, reading, and caring for her family. She especially enjoyed long walks and picnics at Swan Lake State Park.
Survivors include her sons: Philip Wittrock of Cedar Rapids, Richard (Susan) Wittrock of Minneapolis, Minn., Curtis Wittrock of Jefferson City, Mo., Charles (Patti) Wittrock of Gilbert, Ariz., and Scott (Christine) Wittrock of Boynton Beach, Fla.; her grandchildren: Robert Wittrock, Jonathan Wittrock, Andrew Halvorson, and Kaley Cooper; as well as other extended relatives.
Ferne was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Louis; her sister, Dorothy Schwenger; and her brothers, Glen and John Graves.
