Gerald J. Haubrich, 88, of Carroll, died at Carroll Health Center on Monday, Oct. 29, 2012.

Visitation will be at 9 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll.

Mass of the Christian burial will begin at Holy Spirit Church at 10 a.m.  

The Rev. Tim Johnson will be celebrant.

Lectors will be Greg Haubrich and Amy Haubrich.

Gift bearers will be Judy Haubrich and Irene Ankenbauer.

Casket bearers will be Abby Haubrich, Jennie Haubrich, Jake McCollum, Alex Galbraith, Gina and Ryan Winter, Nikki and Riley Auna and Brynn Auna.

Burial will be at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Templeton at 12:30 p.m.

Gerald John, son of Joseph J. and Mary (Pfieffer) Haubrich was born Jan. 3, 1924, on a farm outside Dedham, in Carroll County. He was one of 14 children born to this family.  He attended a parochial school near Dedham.

On Feb. 5, 1947, Gerald married Maxine Wurr at Annunciation Church in Coon Rapids.  

Three children were born to this union.  Gerald and Maxine farmed north of Templeton for 42 years. Gerald was also a talented welder who had his own welding and repair shop called Country Welding.  

In 1976 Gerald earned the prestigious Goodyear Conservation Award in the Carroll County Soil Conservation Program. He was a pioneer in the use of terraces to conserve and prevent soil runoff.  

Gerald was a lover of tools and always carried a pair of pliers with him. Gerald and Maxine moved to Carroll in 1988. He worked as a grounds keeper for three years for the city of Carroll and seven years for Carroll Community Schools.  

Gerald was a member of the Carroll Community School Board for 13 years, and earned the position of vice president and president in his later years of serving. Gerald’s faith was a big part of his life, and he attended mass regularly at Holy Spirit and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Over the last year Gerald’s health started to decline. Two weeks ago he moved to Carroll Health Center and was soon placed on hospice.  

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Maxine Haubrich of Carroll; three children Greg (Char) Haubrich of Rock Valley; Amy Haubrich of Ralston, Neb.; Anne Galbraith of LaCrosse, Wis.; six grandchildren Nikki (Riley) Auna of LaCrosse, Wis.; Alex Galbraith LaCrosse, Wis.; Jake McCollum of Ralston, Neb.; Abby Haubrich of Sioux Falls, S.D.; Jennie Haubrich of Vermillion, S.D.; Gina (Ryan) Winter of Lawton; one great-grandchild Brynn Auna of LaCrosse, Wis.; sox siblings Ron (Charlotte) Haubrich of Carroll; Mary Lou Kasperbauer of Longmont, Colo.; Marjorie (Lawrence) Schultes of Carroll; Irene Ankenbauer of Carroll;  Norma Jean (Ron) Irlbeck of Oxnard, Calif.; Donna Lee Grimm of Longmont, Colo.; five sisters-in-law Melva Haubrich of Carroll, Shirley Haubrich of Manning, June Anthofer of Granger, Lou Cashatt of Eldora and Sandy Wurr of Coon Rapids; three brothers-in-law Dennis Wurr of Coon Rapids, LeVerne Cashett of Eldora, Ambrose Anthofer of Granger; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.  

Preceding Gerald in death are his parents; two sisters Clara Haubrich and Margaret Tigges; five brothers Ambrose, William, Wilfred, Clarence and Joseph Haubrich; three brothers-in-law Leonard Tigges, Lawrence Kasperbauer and Wayne Grimm; three nephews Alan Haubrich, Richard Kasperbauer and Jeff Haubrich; and one niece Eileen Haubrich.
