Hazel C. (Eng) Belstene, 103, of Odebolt, Iowa, died Sunday, May 5, 2013, at Morningside Rehab and Care Center in Ida Grove, Iowa.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 14, at United Methodist Church in Odebolt.

Casket bearers will be grandsons Ron Steuk, Greg Steuk, Kevin Steuk, Keith Belstene and Steve Vaughn and great-grandson Justin Belstene. Honorary casket bearers will be granddaughters Barb Belstene, Julie Belstene, Karen Belstene, Kim Simmons, Cindy Vaughn and Brenda Van Houten.

Burial will be at Odebolt Cemetery in Odebolt.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, May 13, at Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Odebolt.

Born Aug. 27, 1909, in Ida County. Ida Grove, Iowa, Hazel was a daughter of Alfred and Beda (Skagen) Eng. She attended country school in Ida County and graduated from high school in Ida Grove. She played basketball in high school.

She was a housekeeper for the Belstene family, where she met her future husband, Earl. She taught at Hayes Township Country School for about three years. She married Earl Belstene at the Arthur Baptist Church. She was a housewife. The family lived in rural Ida Grove, rural Arthur and in Odebolt.

She was a member of Arthur Baptist Church for years and served on several committees that even continued after the Arthur Baptist Church was closed. She then joined United Methodist Church in Odebolt and was an active member there as well. She also volunteered by making crafts for the Odebolt Nursing Home's annual craft show.

She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, card games and board games. She made afghans for all 12 of her grandchildren. She enjoyed going to her grandchildren's music concerts. She kept her mind sharp by doing circle words and crosswords. She learned to drive by her brothers taking her out and saying if she wanted to go home, she was going to drive. She never received a traffic violation in the 80 years she drove. She lived in her home own up to age 97. The advice she gave for a long life was: No smoking, no drinking and a strong belief in the Good Lord.

She is survived by a son, Eldon (Shirley) Belstene of Arthur; 12 grandchildren, Barb Belstene of Atlantic, Julie Belstene of Carroll, Karen Belstene (fiance' Christopher Barlow) of Wilmington, N.C., Keith (Kim) Belstene of Thornton, Ron Steuk Jr. of Crete, Neb., Jeff Steuk of Fresno, Calif., Greg Steuk of Sergeant Bluff, Kevin Steuk of Omaha, Neb., Kim Simmons of Omaha, Cindy (Steve) Vaughn of Blencoe, Iowa, and Brenda Van Houten of Omaha; 17 great-grandchildren, including Justin Belstene of Carroll; eight great-great-grandchildren with a ninth due any day; son-in-law Norman Van Houten of Omaha; and three nieces, Margene O'Leary of West Des Moines, Vernette Waugh of Denver, Colo., and Delores Borchers of Ida Grove.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl, in 1978; an infant son, in 1937; son Larry in 1966; daughters Audrey Steuk in 1990 and LaVon Van Houten in 2010; four brothers, Carl, Clarence, Harry and Elmer; and a sister Mildred.
