Irene Bosman, 89, died peacefully at Calvin Community in Des Moines, Iowa, on Saturday, July 13, 2013.
A memorial service will be held at Central Presbyterian Church, 3829 Grand Ave., Des Moines, at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 24, with visitation one hour prior to the service.
Merle Hay Funeral Home, 4400 Merle Hay Road, Des Moines, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Central Presbyterian Church in her name.
Irene was born May 11, 1924, in Fontanelle, Iowa, to Albert and Mabel Handley. She graduated from Fontanelle High School. She married Ivan Sickels in 1944 and had two daughters, Stephanie and Barbara. In 1952 she married Charles Friesz. They settled into their new home in Dallas Center, Iowa, and had a son, John. Irene worked at the local doctor's office in Dallas Center. Several years later the family moved to Maryland where Charles had accepted a job with the U.S. Government Printing Office and Irene worked with the U.S Department of Commerce in Washington, D.C. A few years later Charles was killed in an automobile related accident. She eventually returned to Dallas Center with the children. In time she married the Rev. Andrew Bosman. Following the call to serve at several churches in Iowa, Andy's last assignment was Scotch Ridge Presbyterian Church in Indianola, Iowa, where he retired. During their time at Scotch Ridge, Irene was a home health care worker in the Warren County area. In early 2005, they moved from their country acreage to Mercy Court senior apartments in Des Moines. Irene moved to Calvin Community in early 2012.
Irene loved cooking, music, and visiting with people.
She is survived by her children, Stephanie DeMarchi (Michael) and John Friesz (Debra); son-in-law, Sean O'Reilly; sister, Maude White and grandchildren Michael Biersma, Damien Friesz, Haley Barshis, Luke O'Reilly, Patrick O'Reilly, and many friends that she has had the pleasure to know over her rich lifetime.
Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Bosman; daughter, Barbara O'Reilly; brother, Wayne Handley and sisters, Elsie Wallace; Virginia Wise.
