Irene M. Meister, 93, of Wall Lake, Iowa, died Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, at Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake.
Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Wall Lake.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with a rosary at 7 p.m. at the church. Burial will be at Wall Lake Cemetery, Wall Lake.
Irene Marie Ramold was born Sept. 17, 1920, on a farm near Shepherd, Mont., 17 miles from Billings, to Frank and Anna (Ulmschneider) Ramold. She attended first through third grades in Shepard and received first communion in Billings at St. Patrick Catholic Church and Catholic School. She was baptized at St. Patrick Church. In 1930, her parents moved back to Nebraska City, Neb., where they were born. Irene was confirmed at St. Mary Church in Nebraska City. She went to St. Mary Grade School, St. Bernard High School and graduated from 12th grade in 1938. She then went to Grand Island Business College where she took a civil service exam. She was called to Washington, D.C., June 15, 1941, and worked in the War Department in the office of the quartermaster general as clerk-typist for 2½ years.
In January 1944, she entered nurse's training with her sister Barbara at the former St. Catherine Hospital, Omaha, Neb., which was affiliated with Creighton University. That hospital in now Archbishop Bergan Mercy Hospital. They graduated as RN's, January 1947.
She worked as a private duty nurse for two years. On Oct. 19, 1947, she met Francis Meister from Wall Lake, who came to see her every Sunday for over a year. They were married Feb. 1, 1949, at St. Mary Church in Nebraska City.
They farmed just east of Wall Lake, and had two sons, Mike and Tom, who live near Wall Lake. She was a farm wife, helping run tractors, on all machinery, except plow, planter and cultivator. She loved animals, gardening and outdoor activities. She loved taking trips with Francis. One of her unfulfilled desires was to go into the Grand Canyon on a mule. They did see the canyon from the rim several times.
On Feb. 1, 1966, she began working as an RN at Twilight Acres, six months on the day shift and then 20 years as night nurse. She retired in August 1986 and had lived in Wall Lake since. She enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles.
She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wall Lake and St. Joseph's Guild, and taught catechism for five years. She served as lay minister and lector.
Irene is survived by her sons: Mike (Marla) Meister, of Wall Lake and Tom Meister of Wall Lake; grandchildren: Jeff Meister of San Jose, Calif., Jason Meister of Terra Haute, Ind., Tina Renwanz of Jefferson, Michelle Meister of Carroll, John Meister of Wall Lake, James (Abby) Meister of Wall Lake, and Stacie Meister of Wall Lake; eight great-grandchildren: Robert, Mary Lou, Joe and Sophia Meister, Alex Reinhart and Pane Renwanz, and Madison and Max Meister; brother Clarence (Teresa) Ramold of Omaha, Neb.; brother-in-law John Schulte of Casper, Wyo.; and many extended family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband Francis, in 2007; her parents; and her sisters: Sister Ann Louise Ramold, Dorothy Ramold and Barbara Schulte.
