Jim was a lifelong farmer, and he was a "flying farmer" earning his pilot's license as a young man. Jim flew his plane to Cuba with his brother Don in the early 1950s. In 1969 he won the beard-growing contest in the Scranton Centennial. He was a member of Scranton First United Methodist Church where he served as chairman of the board of finance. Jim loved to fly his Cessna 140 and help his friends with hunting tips on the ground. He also enjoyed fishing, dancing, telling stories, surprising his wife with gifts, riding his motorcycle, growing and delivering watermelons and sweet corn to his friends and family, and he loved to spend time with his family and many good friends.
