Born Jan. 28, 1920 on the Hunter Family Farm south of Scranton, he was a son of Charles and Inez (Pangborn) Hunter. He grew up on the farm and attended high school in Scranton. Jim was a lifelong farmer, and he was a "flying farmer" earning his pilot's license as a young man. Jim flew his plane to Cuba with his brother Don in the early 1950s. He was married to Cleo Silbaugh on April 20, 1939, at the home of her aunt in Dawson, Iowa. The couple made their home south of Scranton where they raised their three daughters.

Jim was active in the Scranton Odd Fellows Lodge and Scranton Masonic Lodge, he served 21 years on the Scranton School Board, and he was a member of the American Quarter Horse Association.

In 1969 he won the beard-growing contest in the Scranton Centennial. He was a member of Scranton First United Methodist Church where he served as chairman of the board of finance. Jim loved to fly his Cessna 140 and help his friends with hunting tips on the ground. He also enjoyed fishing, dancing, telling stories, surprising his wife with gifts, riding his motorcycle, growing and delivering watermelons and sweet corn to his friends and family, and he loved to spend time with his family and many good friends.

Jim is survived by his wife Cleo Hunter, of 74 fun-filled years, of Scranton; his three daughters: Karen Jayne Hunter-Lumsden and her husband, Monty, of Marion, Iowa, Jessie Anne Hunter-Howard and her husband, James, of Spirit Lake, Iowa, and Inez Mattke and her husband, Mark, of Marion, Iowa; four grandchildren: Dr. Todd Lumsden and his wife, Janice, of Jackson, Mo., Scot Lumsden of Marion, Iowa, Cassady Hoff and her husband, Kevin, of Casper, Wyo., and Mackenzie Mattke of Marion; three great-grandchildren: Marc, Rogen and Kavin; a brother-in-law, Sherman Silbaugh, and his wife, Virginia, of Humboldt, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
