He was born July 27, 1936, to Lloyd and Loretta (Calhoun) Roth at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll. He was baptized Aug. 13, 1936, at the First Presbyterian Church in Wall Lake and received into full membership of this church on Jan. 3, 1954.
Jim married Sandra Brotherson Sept. 10, 1960, at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Wall Lake. This union was blessed with three children: Steven (Peggy) Roth of Wall Lake, Karen (Perry) Grote of Wall Lake and Susan (Jory) Hemer of Odebolt.
He attended Levy Country School and then Wall Lake High School, graduating with the Class of 1954. After high school Jim attended a school for mechanics in Omaha, Neb., and then worked at the Tounget Garage and Comstock Chevrolet. In the spring of 1964 he opened his own mechanics shop and started farming. He lived in the same area his whole life and entered into partnership with his brother Don, known as Roth Brothers Inc.
In his early years, Jim enjoyed snowmobiling, hunting, trapping and always had an eye for old cars and tractors. He always looked forward to the daily chat at the shop with the "Coffee-Pop Bunch." He also loved touring the neighborhood on his ATV checking on neighbors and crops. He was a great story teller, liked to play a few jokes on his family/friends and loved his homemade ice cream. His greatest joy these past 20 years were his six grandchildren who called him "PO".
