Joan Mary Eischeid, 82, died Monday, April 8, 2013, at Thomas Rest Haven Nursing Home in Coon Rapids.

Mass of the Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, April 12, at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Halbur. The Rev. Steven Broderson will be celebrant.

Lector will be Dan Eischeid. Gift bearers will be Lauren Galardi, Marissa Galardi and Jennifer Eischeid.

Casket bearers will be Jason Eischeid, Mathew Eischeid, Darren Eischeid, Eric Halbur, Aaron Halbur and Kevin Eischeid. Honorary casket bearers will be David Eischeid, Dan Eischeid, Doug Eischeid, Duane Eischeid and Dennis Eischeid.

Burial will be at St. Augustine Cemetery in Halbur.

Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 11, at Ohde Twit Funeral Home in Carroll where there will be a vigil service and rosary at 6 p.m. Visitation will resume at 9 a.m. Friday at St. Augustine Church.

Joan Mary, daughter of Alois C. and Hilaria M. (Thelen) Bernholtz, was born Nov. 20, 1930, at Carroll, Iowa. She attended school at Willey and then did domestic work for Dr. Cochrane, among others. Joan also worked in housekeeping at St. Anthony Hospital for a time.

On Sept. 5, 1951, Joan was married to Linus Eischeid at St. Mary's Church in Willey by Father H.J. Dries. They were the parents of seven children and made their home in Halbur. Joan worked at the Holy Trinity School in Halbur from 1977 to 2003. She was a member of St. Augustine Church in Halbur and, after they moved to Carroll, of Holy Spirit Parish. Joan was active in the Women's Guild as well. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and canning, and cake decorating, though her children and grandchildren were the joy of her life.

In 2008 when she began to need more care, Joan moved to Thomas Rest Haven Nursing Home in Coon Rapids.

Joan died just one month and one day after her husband's death.

Joan is survived by her seven children: David Eischeid (Kathy) of Omaha, Neb.; Dan Eischeid (Maureen) of LaVista, Neb.; Marilyn Halbur (Jeff) of Carroll; Doug Eischeid (Pam) of LaVista, Neb.; Marcia Galardi (Greg) of Nebraska City, Neb.; Duane Eischeid of Carroll; and Dennis Eischeid of Carroll; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sisters: Norma Willenborg of Omaha, Neb.; Jolene Guarniere (Sully) of Layton, Utah; Janet Pryor of Wichita, Kan.; brothers: Donald Bernholtz (Beverly) of Carroll and Paul Bernholtz (Joan) of Carroll; sisters-in-law: Mary Bernholtz of Vail; Marlene Willenborg (Ed) of Carroll; Julie Baumhover of Carroll; Bernadette Harrison (Jim) of Omaha, Neb.; Shirley Eischeid of Carroll and Marie Eischeid of Halbur.

She was preceded by her parents; husband Linus Eischeid; sisters Ruth Schmitz and Lois Bernholtz (in infancy); brothers: Bill Bernholtz; Louis Bernholtz (in infancy); brother-in-law Marvin Willenborg; and nephew Kenneth Schmitz.
