Joe Badding, 62, of Carroll, died unexpectedly Friday morning, Jan. 31, 2014, at his residence.

Mass of the Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 4, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll. Celebrant will be Father Timothy Johnson. Music will be by Barb McDermott and the Holy Spirit choir. Mass servers will be Parker and Mallory Badding. Lectors will be Janet Badding and Bill Badding. Gift bearers will be Joe's grandchildren Jacob Lindley and Madison Badding. Eucharistic ministers will be Mary Jo Berning, Joan Badding and Frank Golwitzer. Casket bearers will be Andy Reiman, Steve Venghaus, Bill Badding Jr., Dave Tunning, Don Hagedorn and Jim Berning. Burial will be at Carroll City Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Carroll American Legion.

Friends may call after 4 p.m. Monday at Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll where there will be a Christian wake service at 7 p.m.

The casket will be moved to Holy Spirit Church at 9 a.m. Tuesday when visitation will resume.

Born March 1, 1951, at Carroll, Iowa, John Joseph Badding was a son of William and Rose (Schroeder) Badding. He spent his younger years in the Arcadia area and attended St. John School and later graduated from Kuemper Catholic High School with the Class of 1969. Joe served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, receiving the National Defense Medal, Vietnam Service Medal and Vietnam Campaign Medal.

On May 19, 1973, he married Doreen "Surge" Golwitzer at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll. Joe and Surge made their home in Carroll where he worked at Badding Construction and later owned and operated L&J Construction. He had been working at Pella Corporation since 1986.

Joe enjoyed golfing, camping, Iowa State Cyclones, listening to Rush Limbaugh on talk radio, and having a refreshment with his family and friends. Joe's greatest joy was his family, especially his children and his grandchildren. He was a member of the Arcadia American Legion.

Joe is survived by his wife Surge Badding of Carroll; his children: Wendy Lindley and her husband Paul of Sioux City, Eric Badding and his wife Amy of Ames, and Pete Badding and his wife Jennifer of Clive; his grandchildren: Jacob, Garrett, and Nicholas Lindley, Madison, Max, Katelyn, Kennedy, Briar and Knox Badding; his siblings: Bob (Joan) Badding of Carroll, Mary Jo (Pete) Berning of Arcadia, Rosie (Lon) Diers of Carroll, Kathryn (Elmer) Bedford of Carroll, Janet Badding of Oak Park, Ill., and Bill (Mardy) Badding of Carroll; his mother-in-law, Josephine Golwitzer of Carroll; his sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law: Carolyn Badding of Arcadia, Ernie (Linda) Golwitzer of Huntsville, Ala., Frank (Jeanie) Golwitzer of St. Louis, Mo., Mary Ann Darwin of Carroll, Noreen Dickerson of Pueblo, Colo., Linda (Jerry) Reiman of Carroll, and Rich (Barb) Golwitzer of Omaha, Neb.; as well as many nieces, nephews, other extended relatives, and many friends.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, William and Rose Badding; his daughter, Samantha Rose Badding in infancy; his brothers: Donald Badding and Jack Badding in infancy; his father-in-law, Fred Golwitzer; and his brother-in-law, Derrill Dickerson.
