John Paul Toms, 74, of Glidden, Iowa, died Wednesday, October 23, 2013, at Carroll Health Center Nursing Home.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 28, at Peace Lutheran Church in Glidden with Pastor Alan Miller officiating.

Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, at Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Glidden where there will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 a.m. Monday when visitation will resume.

Organist for the service will be Becky Miller, and soloist will be Carl Wilburn. Casket bearers will be John's grandsons Casket bearers will be John's grandsons Andy Toms, Alex Toms, Bobby Toms, John Reineman, Dale Reineman and Nick Kinman. Burial will be at Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery near Glidden.

Born May 20, 1939, at the home of his parents, Ira and Julia Ann (Kelley) Toms, he was the 13th child of the family. He attended several different schools in his youth. During his life John worked as a farm laborer. He also worked at AMF Manufacturing in Jefferson. He retired after 22 years as maintenance man and custodian for the Glidden-Ralston Community School District.

On June 4, 1960, he married Ruby Janssen. They made their home in Glidden. Four children were born to this union: Rick, John, Lori and Dianna. On May 28, 1994, John married Sandra Eileen Brannan Reinhart at Grace Baptist Church in Glidden. This union brought two stepsons to the family: Monte and Matthew Reinhart.

After retirement in 2001, John enjoyed golfing, yard work, gardening and some travel. He enjoyed animals and feeding the birds and squirrels. When the children were growing up the family enjoyed camping.

John was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Glidden for many years and dearly loved reading his Bible and getting closer to God.

John is survived by his wife Sandra of Glidden; two daughters: Lori Kinman and her husband Shawn of Norwalk, Iowa, and Dianna Reineman and her fiancé Joe Ohnemus of Norwalk, Iowa; two sons: Ricky Toms and his wife Mary Jo of Glidden and Johnny Toms and his wife Cathy of Glidden; a stepson Monte Reinhart and his wife Ranae of Mount Dora, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; one step-grandson; seven great-grandchildren; a sister Jeanie Heuton and her husband Wendall of Carroll; two brothers James Toms and his wife Vickie of Lake View, Iowa, and Raymond Toms of Scranton; and several nieces and nephews and extended family.

John was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Dewey; sisters Pearl Dorman, Ruth Alspach, Eva Toms, Clarabell Owen, Nellie Brock, Dorothy Jarvis, Nina Daiker and Ruby Richards; his in-laws Charles and Alice Brannan; and a stepson Mathew Scott Reinhart.
