Ken Humlicek, 59, of Des Moines, Iowa, and formerly of Carroll, died Saturday, Oct. 20, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Private family graveside services will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 24, at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Carroll with Father Timothy Johnson from Holy Spirit Catholic Church officiating.   

Casket bearers will be Jim Humlicek, Adam Humlicek, David Humlicek, Nathan Badding, Tyler Badding, Tammy Humlicek and Katie Humlicek. Military honors will be conducted by the Carroll American Legion.

Friends may call at Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 5 p.m. Tuesday. There will be a rosary at 7 p.m. Memorials may be left at the funeral home for the American Cancer Society.

Born Feb. 6, 1953, at Carroll, Ken was a son of Clarence “Butch” and Laura (Schieffer) Humlicek.  He attended SS. Peter and Paul School and later attended Kuemper High School.  

Following his formal education he served in the U.S. Navy for six years. Ken was then employed in the maintenance department at St. Anthony Hospital in Carroll.  

Most recently he was working in Des Moines for Des Moines Area Community College in the maintenance department until his illness.  Ken loved the outdoors, fishing and hunting and loved spending time with his family.  

He enjoyed the simple things in life and always had a positive attitude throughout his illness.

Ken is survived by his special friend, Linda Welshhons of Des Moines; his son Jim Humlicek of Des Moines; his mother, Laura Humlicek of Carroll; his siblings: Mike (Caroline) Humlicek of Carroll, Butch (Vicki) Humlicek of Carroll, Tim (Lynda) Humlicek of Ames, Tom (Gina) Humlicek of Lake of the Ozarks, Mo., and Diane (Nick) Badding of Carroll; as well as many nieces, nephews, other extended relatives and many friends.

Ken was preceded in death by his father, Clarence “Butch” Humlicek; one brother in infancy, David Humlicek; and his nephew, John Humlicek.
