LaVern Hoffmann, 64, of Carroll, died Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.

Mass of the Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 17, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll. The Rev. Timothy Johnson will be celebrant and the Revs. Andrew Hoffmann and Tim Boekelman concelebrants. Lector will be Karla Rice. Gift bearers will be Lawrence Hoffmann and Geralyn Shirbroun. Eucharistic ministers will be Rosemary Possehn and Earl Possehn. Music will be "I Will Raise Him Up," "Only a Shadow," "Here I Am Lord" and "On Eagle's Wings" by Holy Spirit choir and organist Barb McDermott.

Casket bearers will be Kurt Possehn, Joseph Hoffmann, Nathan Shirbroun, Ernie Segebart, Rodney Segebart, Justin Hoffmann and Jonathan Halterman. Honorary casket bearers will be LaVern's nieces.

Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.

Visitation will begin at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Ohde Twit Funeral Home ( in Carroll with a rosary at 4 and a prayer service at 7.

Memorials may be made to New Hope Village.

LaVern Joseph, son of John F. and Linda Mae (Thelen) Hoffmann, was born July 16, 1948 in Carroll. He attended St. Ann School in Vail for two years and then Grant #5 for 15 years. After that he went to the Glenwood State School until 1977 when he became one of the first residents of New Hope Village in Carroll.

LaVern was a member of Holy Spirit Parish in Carroll. He was always a busy man, enjoying playing dice, cards, music, singing and puzzles. Artwork, watching Western movies, especially John Wayne movies, and eating Three Musketeers candy bars were a pleasure for him. He was interested in cars, the Special Olympics and Challenge Days. Above all he loved being with his family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Cletus, in infancy, Delbert and John Hoffmann; sister LaVeda Segebart; nephew Joshua Hoffmann; and grandparents Sylvester and Mathilda (Neuerberg) Thelen and John F. and Magdalena (Sondgeroth) Hoffmann.

LaVern is survived by his siblings: Melvin Hoffmann of Dundalk, Md.; Rosemary (Earl) Possehn of Fort Dodge; Loras (Marlene) Hoffmann of Arcadia; Daryl Hoffmann of Carroll; Lawrence (Char) Hoffmann of Glidden; Geralyn Shirbroun and fiancé Darwin Halterman of Bayard; and Brenda (Jackie) Cain of Greenville, Ky.; brother-in-law Ernest Segebart of Denison; sister-in-law Donna Hoffmann of Carroll; many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; other relatives and friends.
