Leona Janssen Givens, 89, of Pittsburgh, Pa., died Monday, Jan. 6, 2014, in Pittsburgh.
A celebration of her life will be held at Temple Terrace Presbyterian Church at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 11.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Givens Performing Arts Center, University of North Carolina at Pembroke, 1 University Drive, Pembroke, N.C. 28372.
She was born Sept. 14, 1924, in Glidden, Iowa, to Bill and Recka (Prill) Janssen.
She was a veteran of the U.S. Navy having worked on top-secret germ-warfare projects during World War II. She was a realtor and church secretary, but primarily reared her children and supported the career of her husband, Paul.
She is survived by her children, Gregg (Marianna), Stann (Bonnie), Rodney and Deborah (Robert Bauman); nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Faye Irelan (Wayne); sisters-in-law, Joan Janssen and Flora Janssen; brother-in-law Roy Givens (Delores); many nieces and nephews; close friends and family that she cherished.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Paul Givens; her parents, Bill and Recka Janssen; and brothers, Roy and Merle.
