MARIE M. THIELEN
Marie Thielen, 91, of Carroll, died early Friday morning, Aug. 17, 2012, at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll. Celebrant will be Father Timothy Johnson. Con-celebrant will be Father Eugene Murray. Music will be by Barb McDermott and the Holy Spirit Choir with John Wagner as soloist. Lectors will be Marie’s granddaughters Amy Maynes, Amanda Hill and Allison Wiskus. Gift bearers will be Marie’s great-grandchildren Justin and Eric Malcom and Rebecca Maynes. Eucharistic ministers will be Lorena Grossman and Tom Kollasch. Honorary casket bearers will be Marie’s grandchildren. Casket bearers will be Marie’s grandsons Michael Cruchelow, William Thielen, Nick Neary, Eric Thielen, Aaron Thielen, Mark Thielen, Jacob Thielen and Trevor Collings. The Carroll Catholic Daughters of the Americas will form an honor guard for the funeral mass. Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.
Friends may call at Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 p.m. Monday. There will be a rosary at 4 p.m. by the Carroll Catholic Daughters of the Americas and a Christian wake service at 7 p.m. by Holy Spirit Parish.
The casket will be moved to Holy Spirit Church at 9 a.m. Tuesday when visitation will resume. Memorials may be left at the funeral home or the church for St. Anthony Pastoral Care Endowment Fund.

Born Jan. 16, 1921, at Willey, Marie was a daughter of Bernard and Mary (Berger) Grossman. She spent her younger years in the Willey area and attended St. Mary’s School through the eighth grade. Following her education Marie assisted in the homes of various families in the Carroll area. On June 1, 1943, she married William Thielen at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Willey, Iowa. The couple farmed in Carroll and Audubon Counties where Marie was a devoted housewife and mother. In 1963 they moved to Carroll where Marie worked as a housekeeper for St. Anthony Nursing Home for 20 years. In addition to her family, Marie had a deep devotion to her faith and was active in her church and various prayer groups over the years. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, fishing, socializing with her many friends and hosting family gatherings. Marie’s greatest joy was her grandchildren. She was a member of Holy Spirit Church, and the Carroll Catholic Daughters of the Americas.
Marie is survived by her children: Larry (Sandy) Thielen of Carroll, Jim (Joleen) Thielen of Maple River, Duane (Barbara) Thielen of Carroll, Mary Carol (Glenn) Collings of Manchester, N.H., Jane (Pat) Neary of Omaha, Neb., William (Barbara) Thielen of Omaha, Neb., Cheryl (Larry) Cruchelow of Carroll, Kathy “Tiger” Thielen of Omaha, Neb., and Mark (Anna) Thielen of Omaha, Neb.; 16 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one brother, Robert (Lorena) Grossman of Willey; four sisters: Freda (Joe) Tigges of Dedham, Imelda Kerkhoff of Manning, Delores (Jim) Greenwood of Cottage Grove, Minn., and Marilyn (Wayne) Heithoff of Urbandale; her in-laws: Rose Thielen of Granger; and Ed Tigges of Carroll; as well as other extended relatives and many friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband William in August of 1998; her son, Tommy Lynn Thielen; her granddaughter, Jennifer Thielen; her great-granddaughter, Peony Dowling; three sisters: Helen Thielen, Rita Tigges, and Lucy Anna Grossman in infancy; and two brothers: Louis Grossman and Andrew Grossman in infancy.
