Marie Schumacher, 85, of Breda, died early Monday morning, Sept. 3, 2012, at Regency Park Nursing Home of Carroll.

Mass of the Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 6, at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Breda. Celebrant will be Father Gary Snyder. Mass servers will be Matt Wessling and Miriah Masching. Music will be by Marilyn Hundling and the St. Bernard’s Choir with Marie’s grandson Nick Schumacher as soloist. Lector will be Rita Ann Venner. Gift bearers will be Kristy, Mackenzie and Rachael Doyle. Eucharistic ministers will be William Schumacher and Leonard and Jean Grote. Casket bearers will be Nick Schumacher, Dakota Doyle, Mike Schwabe, Marc Schumacher, Glen Irlbeck and Duane Irlbeck. Burial will be at St. Bernard Cemetery in Breda.

Friends may call at the Sharp Funeral Home in Breda after 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. There will be a rosary at 5 p.m., followed by a Franciscan Secular 3rd Order Fraternity Service. There will be a Christian wake service at 7 p.m. by St. Bernard Parish.

Born Oct. 3, 1926, at Breda, Iowa, Marie was a daughter of Ben and Elizabeth (Fehring) Schwabe. She attended country school and later graduated from St. Bernard High School with the Class of 1943. Following her schooling, Marie worked as a homemaker in a rooming house in Breda. On May 4, 1948, she married Leonard Schumacher at St. Bernard Catholic Church in Breda. They made their home there where Marie was a homemaker and later worked as a nurse’s aide at Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake. She then attended St. Anthony School of Nursing and went to work as an LPN at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital in Lake City, and then at McCrary Rost Clinic until her retirement. Marie enjoyed reading, word puzzles, crocheting, and cheering for the Cubs. She loved spending time with her family and her dogs. She was a member of St. Bernard Parish, the Parish Ladies Guild and the Franciscan Secular 3rd Order Fraternity.

Survivors include two sons: Jerry (Ruth) Schumacher and John (Ann) Schumacher, both of Breda; her son-in-law, Dale Goebel, of Clive; her grandchildren: Kristy (John) Doyle of Altoona and Nick Schumacher of Breda; her great-grandchildren: Dakota, Drew, Mackenzie, and Rachael Doyle, all of Altoona; her sister, Helen (Sonny) Irlbeck of Templeton; one brother, Roger (Kay) Schwabe of Breda; as well as several nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Leonard in August of 1990; her daughter, Leann Goebel; her son, Leonard Eugene; and one brother, Paul Schwabe.
