Margaret Irene Drey was born Sept. 29, 1915, in Carroll, Iowa, to William and Mary (Lucy) Drey. She was baptized at the Catholic church in Carroll and confirmed into the Catholic faith at Sacred Heart Church in Early, Iowa. She grew up in the Carroll area before moving to Early, where she attended Sacred Heart High School, graduating in 1933. She went on to further her education at St. Joseph School of Nursing in Sioux City, Iowa, receiving her degree in nursing.

She met the love of her life in Kenneth Smith, and they were married on Feb. 18, 1947, at Sacred Heart Church in Early. This union was blessed with five children: Linda, William, John, Connie Jean and Joseph. Margaret worked for many years serving her community as a nurse. She had a true love for people and continued caring for others well after her retirement from nursing. In her spare time she loved playing bridge and visiting with her friends and family.
