Marie Monahan, 87, died Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson, surrounded by her family.

Mass of the Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 15, at St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Churdan with Father Jeff Schleisman and Father Lynn Bruch officiating. Music will be sung by the church choir. Burial will be at St. Patrick Catholic Cemetery west of Churdan.

Serving as casket bearers will be her grandsons Matthew Kenney, Patrick Kenney, Brian Carlson, Eric Monahan, Chad Monahan, Shawn Monahan, Mick Monahan, Craig Monahan, Nick Monahan and Brett Monahan. Honorary casket bearers will be her granddaughters Jennifer Brunk, Katie Carlson, Jamie Monahan, Jessica Young, Megan Monahan, Mikayla Monahan, Mackenzie Monahan, Madison Monahan and Mollie Monahan.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. with rosary prayed at 6 p.m. and a vigil service at 6:30 p.m. Friday at the church.

Brown Funeral Home of Churdan is assisting the family.

Marie Monahan, daughter of Jack Sr. and Florence (Siemann) Burke, was born Sept. 7, 1926, at her parents' farm home south of Lohrville. Marie attended St. Joseph Parochial School in Lohrville and later graduated from Lohrville High School in 1944. On Nov. 25, 1947, Marie Burke married Eugene Monahan at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Lohrville. Eight children were born to this union. After their marriage, Marie and Eugene lived their entire 67 years of married life together on their present farm home.

Marie was a faithful member of St. Columbkille Catholic Church in Churdan and believed that family and faith were the most important things in life. She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and the Rosary Society. Marie enjoyed farm life, playing cards, gardening, attending her grandchildren's sporting events and was a wonderful baker of pies and cookies.

Marie is survived by her husband; seven children: Delores (Ivan) Kenney of Bagley, Diane (Jerry) Carlson of Clive, Teresa (Ron) Dickson of Alpharetta, Ga., Kevin (Joy) of Rockwell City, Jerome (Dorene) of Churdan, Phillip (Pam) of Wayne, Neb., and Richard (Missy) of Lohrville, 20 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son, Patrick in 1969; and brothers and sisters Francis McCormick, Winnie Hardy, Margaret Higgins, Monica Kavanaugh, Anna Hardy and Jack Burke Jr.
