Marie Speyer, 96, of Carroll, died Friday, Jan. 10, 2014, at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll.

Mass of the Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll. Celebrant will be Father Robert Gralapp. Con-celebrant will be Father Timothy Johnson. Music will be by Marcy Anderson and the St. Lawrence choir with Jake Gute as cantor. Lector will be Charlene Rupiper. Gift bearers will be Debbie Baur and Beth Dillow. Casket bearers will be Barry Trevarrow, Brian Trevarrow, Zachary Baur, Jeff Louis, Mark Louis and Roger Baur. Burial will be at Carroll City Cemetery.

Friends may call after 3:30 p.m. Monday at Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll where there will be a rosary at 4 p.m. and a Christian wake service at 6:30 p.m. by St. Lawrence Parish.

The casket will be moved at 9 a.m. Tuesday to St. Lawrence Church where visitation will resume.

Born May 16, 1917, at Arcadia, Iowa, Marie Catherine was a daughter of Peter and Mary (Hugeback) Schmitz. She spent her younger years in the Arcadia community and attended St. John Grade School and later Arcadia High School. On June 7, 1937, Marie married Albert Speyer at St. John Catholic Church in Arcadia with Father Mathias Stork officiating. The couple made their home in Arcadia and later moved to the Carroll community. Marie worked as a housekeeper at St. Lawrence rectory for over 20 years, worked part time at Mid-American Energy, and also cleaned homes for families in Carroll. She enjoyed baking, cooking, dancing, and visiting with friends and family. Marie loved music and was a member of the George Strait Fan Club, attending 18 of his concerts in her lifetime. She was also a member of St. Lawrence Parish, and Parish Ladies Guild.

Survivors include her children: Marlou Trevarrow and husband Lee of Omaha, Neb., Susan Louis and husband Jim of Carroll, and Steve Speyer and friend Lonzetta Graham of Phoenix, Ariz.; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; her sister, Norma Berger of Carroll; her sisters-in-law: Alice Schmitz of Arcadia and Florence Schmitz of Carroll; as well as other extended relatives.

Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Albert, in 1979; great-grandchildren Brooks Louis and Jordan Louis; sisters Florentine Rupiper, Agnes Rupiper and Bertilla "Tootie" Andersen; and brothers Leo, Lewis and Lawrence Schmitz.
