Nancy Smart (Clapper/Dirkx), 84, of Fort Wayne, Ind., died Oct. 17, 2013.
Cremation has been completed, and a memorial remembrance will be held in Auburn, Iowa, at a later date.

She was born and raised in Iowa, a graduate of Auburn High School and Iowa Methodist School of Nursing, Des Moines. Nancy later graduated from Sacred Heart School of Anesthesia in Yankton, S.D., remaining there for four years as an instructor of anesthesia. She was instrumental in establishing the first school of anesthesia in the Veterans Administration system in 1970. She retired from hospital duties for health reasons and moved to Albuquerque, N.M., in 1989.
Nancy is survived by a daughter, Cathleen (Larry) Braner of Fort Wayne, Ind.; granddaughters Sheryl (Kevin) Hennelly of Fort Wayne, Ind., Stephanie (John) Davis of Albuquerque, N.M., Michael (Amanda) Braner of Westfield, Ind.; six great-grandchildren; younger siblings, Sheri Dirkx, Breda, Iowa, Jolene Bachman, Early, Iowa, Kay Reicks, Manson, Iowa, Peggy Derner, Lake View, Iowa, Jim Clapper, Fargo, N.D., Chuck Clapper, Lake View, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews and special nephew, Casey Jorgensen, (Justine and Cassidy) Lincoln, Neb.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Bunny Clapper.
Her immediate family requests that in lieu of flowers, an expression of sympathy be given in Nancy's name to Trees Forever, 770, 7th Ave., Marion, Iowa 52302, as they have been involved in Auburn's beautification and the Sauk Rail Trail.
