Phyllis Marie Oswald, 77, of Carroll, died unexpectedly at her home on Saturday, March 30, 2013.
Mass of the Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 4, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll. Father Timothy Johnson will be celebrant, and Father Tim Boekelman will be concelebrant.
Gift bearers will be Austin Oswald, Zack Anderson, Garrett Anderson and Rachel Anderson.
Mass servers will be Luke Griesel and Matthew Griesel. Eucharistic ministers will be Ed Griesel, Tracy Kendzora and Mike McCaffrey. Lectors ill be Autumn Schulz, Cassie Kendzora and Mandie Kendzora. Gift bearers will be Austin Oswald, Garrett Anderson, Zack Anderson and Rachel Anderson.
Casket bearers will be Alex Oswald, Ashlee Daniels, Amber Kitt, Eddie Griesel, Joey Griesel and Ryan Kendzora.
Music will be "On Eagle's Wing," "Hail Mary, Gentle Woman," "Eye Has Not Seen," "How Great Thou Art," with Gabriel Griesel as cantor and soloist, Holy Spirit choir and accompanist Barb McDermott.
Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.
Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Wednesday, with a rosary at 4 and prayer service at 7, at Ohde Twit Funeral Home in Carroll.
Phyllis Marie Sapp was born to Albert Sr. and Margaret (Neuerberg) Sapp on Jan. 5, 1936. She was the youngest of four children. At age 8 she moved with her family into the house where she currently lived. She attended SS. Peter and Paul Grade School and graduated from St. Angela's Academy in Carroll in 1954. Before her marriage, she worked at the Woolworth's store. She was a homemaker until 1979 when she began working for the Carroll Daily Times Herald. She worked in the collating department until 2010. She also worked at Pamida for several years.
In 1955 she met John Oswald while attending a dance in Arcadia, Iowa. They were married at SS. Peter and Paul Church in Carroll on May 4, 1957. This union was blessed with five children. The couple lived in Carroll all of their married life.
She was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Church and later Holy Spirit Church where she was a member of the Ladies Guild.
Phyllis loved filling her home with beauty, spending time with her children and grandchildren, and keeping in touch with friends and relatives via the phone. She had a unique sense of humor, a wonderful ability to listen to others, and was known for her patience.
She is survived by four daughters: Jane and husband Ed Griesel of Sioux City; Joleen Schulz of Carroll; Judy and husband Tracy Kendzora of Des Moines; and Julie and husband Rich Anderson of North Branch, Minn.; son John Jr. Oswald and wife Tammy of Omaha, Neb.; 16 grandchildren: Eddie Griesel; Joey (Liz) Griesel; Gabe, Luke and Matthew Griesel; Ashlee (Joe) Daniels; Amber (Jon) Kitt; Autumn Schulz and fiancé Ben Hellman; Cassie, Mandie and Ryan Kendzora; Alex and Austin Oswald; Garrett, Zack and Rachel Anderson; five great-grandchildren: Jonathan Griesel, Brayden and Addison Griesel; and Emma and Joshua Daniels; brother Donald Sapp of Bullhead City, Ariz.; her husband's sisters Agnes Louis of Carroll and Marie (Max) Bell of Des Moines; her husband's brothers Andrew (Iris) Oswald of Omaha, Neb., and Richard (Emily) Oswald of Coon Rapids; and sister-in-law Marlene Oswald of Adams, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her husband. John Oswald, in 2009; her parents, Albert Sapp Sr. and Margaret Sapp; sister Betty Bushman; brother Albert Sapp Jr. and wife Barb; sister-in-law Darlene Sapp; and infant grandson Johnnie Griesel.
