Robert Grossman, 85, of Willey, died Thursday, Aug. 30, 2012 at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll.

Mass of the Christian burial was at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 4, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Willey. Celebrant was Father Timothy Johnson.  Con-celebrants were Father Ed Tiedeman, Father Timothy Boekelman and Father Jim Tigges.  

Mass servers were Bob’s grandson Jason Grossman, Bob’s great-granddaughter Madelyn Bauer and Brett Schultes.  Music was by Barb Danner and the St. Marys Choir. Lectors for the Mass were Bob’s sons, Don Grossman and Dennis Grossman, and Bob’s granddaughter Jessica Grossman.  Gift bearers were Bob’s grandchildren Kara Grossman, Jack Grossman, Tina Grossman, Beth Grossman and Leah Bauer, and Bob’s great-granddaughter Hannah Andersen.  

Casket bearers were Bob’s grandchildren Melanie Bauer, Scott Grossman, John Bauer, Chris Grossman, Ben Grossman and Cole Grossman.  Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Willey.

Born Feb. 12, 1927, near Willey, Robert Grossman was a son of Bernard and Mary (Berger) Grossman.  He spent his lifetime in the Willey area and attended St. Mary School.  

On Jan. 30, 1951, he married Lorena Tunning at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Dedham. The couple made their home northeast of Willey where Bob was a grain and livestock farmer, retiring in 1988.  

Bob and Lorena continued to make their home near the family farm, and in February 2012 as his health began to fail he became a resident at St. Anthony Nursing Home in Carroll.  Bob was an avid sports fan, playing ball in his younger years, later being a volunteer umpire for various teams in the area.  

He was a huge St. Louis Cardinals fan but enjoyed watching all sports on television.  Bob enjoyed socializing and making daily visits to the Willey Tavern.  He was a lifelong member of St. Mary Parish in Willey and had also served on the Kuemper Parents Club.

Survivors include his wife of 61 years Lorena Grossman of Willey; his children: Dennis (Aggie) Grossman of Glidden, Randy (Deb) Grossman of Denison, Jane (Dale) Bauer of Willey, Jim (Donna) Grossman of Glidden, Don (Sue) Grossman of Willey, and Tim (Kelly) Grossman of Clive; 19 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; four sisters: Freda (Joe) Tigges of Dedham, Imelda Kerkhoff of Manning, Delores (Jim) Greenwood of Cottage Grove, Minn., and Marilyn (Wayne) Heithoff of Urbandale; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Ed Tigges of Carroll, Evelyn (Vernis) Sporrer of Templeton, Leonard (Verna) Tunning of Dedham, Clarence (Linda) Tunning of Carroll, and Bob (Mary Louise) Tunning of Burnsville, Minn., and also Lois (George) VanCleave of Guthrie Center; as well as other relatives and many friends.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents; his sisters: Helen Thielen, Rita Tigges, Marie Thielen, and Lucy Anna Grossman in infancy; and his brothers: Louis Grossman and Andrew Grossman in infancy.
