Roger A. Owens, 73, of Sac City, died Monday, May 14, 2012, at Park View Rehabilitation Center in Sac City.  

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 17, at Oakland Cemetery in Sac City, with military graveside rites by the VFW Post 590 and American Legion Cantigny Post 195 of Sac City.

Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Sac City is in charge of arrangements.

Roger was born on Sept. 30, 1938, to Graydon and Geneva (O’Dell) Owens in Bingham, Ill.  He attended elementary school in Bingham before moving to Sac City where he completed his elementary and high school education, graduating in 1956.  

He enlisted in the U.S. Navy on June 17, 1956, serving as a radar operator and was honorably discharged for honest and faithful service on June 16, 1962.

On May 21, 1961, Roger married his sweetheart, Sonja LeRaas in Tombstone, Ariz.  They made their home in Sac City.  After completing his training in law enforcement, Roger joined the Sac City Police force.  He then joined Sac County Law Enforcement as a deputy sheriff for many years and was elected Sac County Sheriff in 1991, retiring in 2003.  He was honored as Sheriff of the Year in 1995 and was inducted into the Sac Community School Hall of Fame in 1996.

Roger enjoyed harness racing and dancing, and was an Iowa Hawkeye fan.  He was a member of the United Methodist Church and Masonic Lodge in Sac City.

Survivors include his son, Robert Strief and wife Melinda of Sac City; grandchildren, Joshua Strief of Des Moines and Kari Strief of Indianola; sisters-in-law, Darlene Owens of Sac City and Ramona (Jack) Grimm of Morton, Ill.; several nieces and nephews, Lance Owens, Debra Petefish, and Cayla Owens all of Illinois, Mark (Susan) Grimm of Groveland, Ill., and Michelle (Tim) Gossman of Tremont, Ill.; extended family members and a host of friends.

Roger was preceded in death by his wife Sonja, April 7, 2011; mother Geneva Owens; father Graydon Owens; and brother Lineol (Bud) Owens.
