Rita Marie Rupiper, 100, of SunnyBrook in Carroll, died Wednesday, June 19, 2013, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.
Mass of the Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 22, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll with Father Timothy Johnson as celebrant.
Visitation will begin at 5 p.m. Friday at Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll where there will be a Christian wake service at 7 by Holy Spirit Parish. The casket will be moved to the church at 8:30 a.m. Saturday when visitation will resume.
An honor guard will be formed at the church by the Catholic Daughters of the Americas and Legion of Mary. Lector for the Mass will be Rita's son-in-law David Quandt. Eucharistic ministers will be her daughters Karen Hess, Joan Hannasch and Deb Quandt. Mass servers will be grandchildren Olivia Klein, Logan Klein and John Rottinghaus. Gift bearers will be grandchildren Julie Woodhouse, Brad Hannasch, Kelly Boell, Heather Knerl and Andrew Arthur. Music for the Mass will be by the Holy Spirit choir with Barb McDermott as organist. Burial will be at Holy Angels Cemetery in Roselle. Casket bearers will be grandchildren Jeff Eischeid, Cathy Rottinghaus, Brian Hannasch, Jenny Higby, Heidi Christensen and Allison Arthur. Honorary casket bearers will be Rita's children Lois Eischeid, Gayle Brinker, Karen Hess, Joan Hannasch, Jerry Rupiper, Deb Quandt and Maribeth Arthur.
Online condolences may be left for Rita's family at www.dahnandwoodhouse.com. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for various charities designated by Rita's family and may be left at the funeral home or the church.
Rita was born May 22, l9l3, at Templeton, Iowa, and was a daughter of John and Gertrude (Fox) Horbach. She attended and graduated from Templeton Schools. She was married to Norbert Rupiper on April 24, l934 at Sacred Heart Church in Templeton by Monsignor Huesman. After living in Lidderdale for four years, the couple moved north of Roselle to farm where Norbert grew up. They resided there until they moved to Carroll in 1989.
Rita was a member of Holy Angels Parish while living in Roselle and Holy Spirit Parish while living in Carroll. She sang in both choirs for many years. She belonged to many organizations connected with the church such as Catholic Daughters, which recently recognized her 79 years of membership on her 100th birthday; Legion of Mary; Serra Club; and Divine Mercy of Perpetual Adoration, where she found much strength, peace and comfort throughout her life. Rita was a true steward of her faith and church and served as eucharistic minister. In the community she shared her life of caring for others. She enjoyed playing cards, watching television and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed bowling in her earlier years.
Rita is survived by seven children: Lois Eischeid (Dennis) of Lookout Mountain, Ga., Gayle Brinker (the late Lynn) of Santa Rosa, Calif., Karen Hess (Bill) of Carroll, Joan Hannasch of Carroll, Jerry Rupiper (Maureen) of Roselle, Deb Quandt (David) of Carroll and Maribeth Arthur of Waterloo; 27 grandchildren; 66 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and a sister Joyce Horbach OSF (Order of the Sisters of St. Francis) of Dubuque, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Norbert in 1997; her son Father Darrell Rupiper OMI (Oblates of Mary Immaculate); sisters Mayme Bierl and Margaret Muhlbauer; and brothers Jack, Joe, Nick and Bill Horbach.
