Born July 21, 1930, in New Hampton, Iowa, Robert was a son of Dr. James and Justina (Nehl) McKone. He graduated from New Hampton High School and the University of Iowa with a B.A. in business administration. On Sept. 4, 1954, he married Agnes Kirsch at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City, Iowa, and in 1958 the couple moved to Carroll.

Bob worked for First Federal Savings and Loan beginning as a teller and retiring as CEO. He retired and worked part time as a bailiff for the court system. He was involved in the community in many ways including president of the Carroll Chamber of Commerce, Exalted Ruler of the Elks, as well as co-chairman of special gifts for the first hospital fund drive. He served as chairman of the board of directors of Iowa Savings Institutions and on the State Board of Funeral Directors. Most recently he was serving on the board of directors of New Opportunities Inc. He volunteered many hours with the St. Anthony Hospital Auxiliary and helped deliver meals on wheels.

Bob never grew old; he always remained young at heart. Bob and Agnes were active in the early years of Carroll Community Theatre. He loved to fish, taking trips with Agnes to Lake of the Woods, and enjoyed wintering with her in Florida. Bob and Agnes enjoyed many summers at Ottertail Lake in Minnesota with their children and as years went on, with their grandchildren. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeyes fan. Bob was a member of St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Carroll.

Survivors include his wife Agnes McKone of Carroll; his children: Sue (Douglas) McKone-Burks of Decorah, Dr. Tim (Marian) McKone of Northfield, Minn., and William (Marion) McKone of Carlsbad, Calif.; a daughter-in-law Margaret McKone of Lisbon; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
