Roland "Whitey" Schleisman, 82, of Perry, died Friday, Feb. 7, 2014, at his home.

The Carris Family Funeral Home was entrusted to fulfill his wishes to have his body donated to the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine in Iowa City. His family will hold a memorial Mass at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Perry. Burial of his ashes will be at Holy Family Cemetery in Lidderdale, Iowa, at a later date.

Roland "Whitey" Schleisman was born Feb. 16, 1931, at Carroll, Iowa, to John and May (Borcherding) Schleisman. He graduated from Carroll High School in 1949. He then continued his education at the Brown Institute in Minneapolis, Minn. Whitey worked at various jobs before coming to Perry in 1963 to work at KDLS Radio as an announcer and salesman. He retired from KDLS at age 62 but continued working there part-time.

Whitey was a member of the St. Patrick Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Perry Elks Lodge, all in Perry. He also volunteered his time at Living History Farms in Urbandale, Iowa. He enjoyed fishing and going on family fishing trips to Canada.

Survivors include his brothers, John (Joanne) Schleisman of Tucson, Ariz., and Duane (Laurina) Schleisman, of Omaha, Neb.; a sister, Colleen (Richard) Moore, of Omaha, Neb.; and 10 nieces and nephews.

Whitey was preceded in death by his parents, John and May Schleisman; a brother Daryl Schleisman; and three nephews.
