Ruth A. Madden, 90, of Fayette, Iowa, formerly of Pocahontas, Iowa, died Thursday, Oct. 17 , 2013, at Fayette.

Funeral was this morning at Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church in Pocahontas with Father Paul Bormann officiating.

Burial was at Calvary Cemetery in Pocahontas.

Ruth Agnes Schachtner was born Aug. 4, 1923, in Mount Carmel. She was a daughter of George and Teresa (Neuerburg) Schachtner. She had three older siblings, Paul, Leo and Verna, and three younger siblings, Walt, Donna and Lloyd. She attended Our Lady of Mount Carmel during grade school until 1936 when the family moved to Fonda, Iowa, where she then attended the Fonda Catholic School. She had worked at a hatchery in Dow City for her uncle for a couple of years and then in 1942, Ruth and her soon-to-be sister-in-law, worked for Scientific Radio Products Co. in Council Bluffs.

Shortly after that, she met her future husband at the Cobblestone Dance Hall in Storm Lake. On May 15, 1945, Ruth married Eugene Madden. The couple farmed in the Albert City/Laurens area, where they were blessed with their four children, Patrick, Jane, Sandra and Elaine.

Ruth enjoyed making and decorating cakes, quilting and sewing in her spare time. In 1973, the couple moved to Pocahontas, where Ruth worked at the Chief Motel, the Princess, and the LeChateau for many years. After retirement, Ruth and Gene began making crafts and attending craft shows. They also enjoyed taking bus trips to various casinos. Ruth was a member of Resurrection of our Lord Catholic Church in Pocahontas and an active member of Catholic Daughters of the Americas.

In 2010, Ruth and Gene moved to Fayette to Maplecrest Manor and Assisted Living Center. While there, they enjoyed many activities, including bowling, where Ruth loved beating Gene each week. She enjoyed her family and especially spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Ruth is survived by her husband Gene of Fayette; son Patrick Madden of Iowa City; daughters Jane Madden of Des Moines, Iowa, Sandra (Mike) Johnson of Hawkeye, and Elaine (Rob) Henderson of Sacramento, Calif.; 10 grandchildren: Darci, Ashley, Abigail, Mitchell, Andrew, Katie, Alexandria, Trey, Bryan and Jasmine; six great-grandchildren: Matthew, Megan, Mahlia, Ella, Kayden and Jewel; brother Lloyd (Marian) Schachnter of Fort Dodge; sister-in-law Myrt Schachtner of Fonda, and many other special family and friends.

She was proceeded in death by her parents; granddaughter Miranda; brothers, Paul, Leo and Walter Schachtner; and sisters, Verna Maystadt and Donna Hoerchler.
