Theodore "Ted" Herman was born Oct. 13, 1921, in Roselle, Iowa, a son of Theodore and Mary (Renze) Starman. He attended Holy Angels School through the eighth grade. During his younger years Ted helped his parents with work on the farm. On Sept. 16, 1952, he married Alice Baumhover at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Carroll. The couple made their home near Roselle from 1952 to 1962 and then moved two miles west of Dedham for 10 years. In 1972 they moved to their home in Carroll. Over the years Ted worked for Taphorn Creamery in Roselle, Lytton Creamery, Carroll Roller Mill, and the Carroll City Cemetery. Ted enjoyed working, helping his sons with farm work, walks to Swan Lake, playing cards, especially card parties, bowling, baseball, driving around the countryside and commenting about other farms, and taking his grandchildren to the park. He was known as a simple man, devoted to his work, and more importantly, his family. He was a member of St. Lawrence Parish, and the Carroll Knights of Columbus.
