Vernon L. Ehlers, 86, of Arcadia, Iowa, passed away on Monday, May 12, 2014, at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll.

Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, May 16, at Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia with Pastor Ben Dose officiating. Friends may call after 5 p.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church where there will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will resume after 8:30 a.m. Friday at the church. Music for the service will be by Carla Robertson and Spencer Owen. Casket bearers will be Vernon's eight grandchildren. Burial will be at the Arcadia Cemetery.

Born Sept. 2, 1927, on his family's farm southeast of Arcadia, he was a son of Julius and Minnie (Wilfang) Ehlers. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia. He attended Washington Township Country School as a boy and graduated from Arcadia High School.

He was married to Lola Ress on Sept. 11, 1949, at Zion Lutheran Church in Manning by Pastor J.M. Ansorge. The couple lived in Manning for a short time before moving to a farm near his family's home farm in 1951. They moved in 1957 to a farm 11/2 miles west where they raised their family. Vernon and Lola moved into Arcadia in 1987.

He served as a Washington Township trustee for many years, he was director of South Crawford REC for 19 years, was on the board of directors of Farmers Co-op in Arcadia for 12 years, he served on the election board and he was on the Planning and Zoning Board of Arcadia for many years.

Vernon was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Arcadia where he served as Elder, taught Sunday school, and served on many other boards. Vernon was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. He enjoyed attending his grandchildren's activities, watching sports on television, playing cards, going to coffee, and spending time and playing games with his family.

Vernon is survived by his wife Lola of Arcadia; a daughter Carla Robertson and her husband George of Chandler, Arizona; two sons: Larry Ehlers and his wife Kristin of Plano, Texas; and Paul Ehlers and his wife Susan of Arcadia; eight grandchildren: Kristen Jacobs and her husband Aaron of Issaquah, Washington, Kelsey Lupole and her husband Andrew of Seattle, Washington, Kimberly Ehlers and her fiancé Joey Bauman of Des Moines, Iowa, Tyler Ehlers of Arcadia, Iowa, Laura Gomez and her husband Steven of Gilbert, Arizona, Julie Robertson of Hawaii, Kaitlyn Ehlers of Plano, Texas, and Lindsey Ehlers of Plano, Texas; three great-grandchildren: Addysen and Alaina Jacobs, and Zachary Gomez; three brothers: Harold Ehlers of Carroll, the Rev. Harvey Ehlers and his wife Adeline of Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, and Wilbert Ehlers and his wife Caroline of Carroll; a sister Ruth Novak of Grand Rapids, Michigan; a sister-in-law Zita Harms and her husband Galen of Anamosa, Iowa; a brother-in-law Vincent Ress and his wife Alice of Oregon; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Vernon was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers Elmer and Albert, and a sister Dorothy Bernstrauch.
