Walter Tigges, 80, of Carroll, died Saturday, March 10, 2012, at Carroll Health Center Nursing Home in Carroll.

Mass of the Christian burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, March 14, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Carroll.

Celebrant will be Father Timothy Johnson.  

Cross bearer will be Walt’s granddaughter Ericka Tigges.  

Mass server will be Megan Klocke.

Lector will be Walt’s granddaughter Brenda Ballard.  

Gift bearers will be Walt’s granddaughters Tawnya Heinrichs, Ashley Behrens and Makayla Kennedy.  

Eucharistic ministers will be Walt’s daughter-in-law Carol Tigges, and Walt’s sister Mary Jane Schenkelberg.  

Casket bearers will be Walt’s grandsons Dan Sander, Craig Sander, Ben Tigges, Todd Tigges, Brad Warnke and Adam Warnke.  

The Carroll 4th Degree Knights of Columbus will form an honor guard for the rosary and for the funeral Mass.  

Burial will be at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Carroll.

Friends may call at Sharp Funeral Home in Carroll after 3:30 p.m. Tuesday. There will be a rosary at 4 p.m. by the Carroll 4th Degree Knights of Columbus and a Christian wake service by Holy Spirit Parish at 7 p.m.  

Visitation will resume at Holy Spirit Church after 9 a.m. Wednesday.

Born Dec. 29, 1931, at Carroll, Walter was a son of Alphonse and Elizabeth (Scharfenkamp) Tigges.  

He married Velma Wittrock on May 19, 1953, at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Roselle.  

Walt and Velma made their home north of Willey where Walt farmed for many years.  

In 2004, they moved to their present home in Carroll.  Walt also worked for the Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service Office and in his later years worked for Volquartsen Custom.  

He was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Parish in Willey and most recently was a member of Holy Spirit Parish and Men’s Club in Carroll.  Walt was also a member of the Carroll 4th Degree Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include his wife Velma of Carroll; his children: Jacie Sander and her husband Allan of Arcadia, Mark Tigges and his wife Carol of Glidden, Marilyn Siepker and her husband Chris of Carroll, Maxine “Coke” Warnke and her husband Jeff of Carroll, Wayne Tigges and his wife Angie of Maple River, Glenn “Shorty” Tigges and his wife Jennifer of Carroll, and Karla Kennedy and her husband Peter of Omaha, Neb.; 24 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; his brothers and sisters: Don (Mary) Tigges of Carroll, Ruth Ann Tigges of Manning, Jerry (Mary) Tigges of Carroll, Carolyn Sovich of Ormond Beach, Fla., Mary Jane (Morrie) Schenkelberg of Sioux City, and Rosalie Davis of Omaha, Neb.; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Charles Wittrock of Carroll, Clarence (Catherine) Wittrock of Carroll, Dorothy Berger of Lohrville, Marjorie (Ed) Steinkamp of Wall Lake, Gerald (Bernice) Wittrock of Carroll, Merlin Wittrock of Carroll, and Ronald (Jeanette) Wittrock of Anita; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives.

Walt was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Diane Venner; his granddaughter, Sara Siepker; his parents-in-law, Charles and Frances Wittrock; and his brothers-in-law: Alvin Berger, Alfred Wittrock, and Frank Sovich.
