Wendell Franklin McCrea, 83, of Sebastapol Calif, and formerly of Sac City, died Wednesday, March 13, 2013, at his home in Sebastapol, Calif.
A celebration of life will be held at his home at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 13.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Petaluma Hospice, 416 Payran St., Petaluma, Calif. 94952.
Mr. McCrea was born Oct. 12, 1929, in Sac County to John Sherman and Goldie (Hawkins) McCrea.
He grew up in Sac City and graduated from Sac City High School in 1947. After high school he joined the Navy and served more than three years during the Korean War.
He was discharged in 1953 achieving the rank of aviator electrician's mate second class. Wendell then attended Wayne (Neb.) State College, where he received a B.A. degree in business education.
He later attended San Francisco State College and was awarded an M.A. degree.
In 1989 Wendell married Joyce Elaine Foster in Sebastapol. They were happily married for 23 years. Wendell had a long career in education, serving as a business teacher, athletic director and dean of students. He retired from Racho Cotati High School in 1990.
Wendell was a member of ICF and his poker group. He enjoyed rock work, wine making, travel, working on his acreage, walking and most of all his family and friends.
He never missed a Sac City class reunion.
Wendell is survived by his spouse, Joyce (Jef) of Sebastapol, Calif.; stepson Rob (Lisa) Stansfield of Clear Lake, Calif.; stepdaughter, Susan Stansfield, of Georgia; granddaughters, Ashley and Brittany of Clear Lake, Calif.; brother Merle (Joan) McCrea of Glidden; sister-in-law Bonnie McCrea of Sac City; nieces and nephews, other relatives and a plethora of friends.
He was preceded in death by his son, Scott; parents, Sherm and Goldie; and his brother, John Sherman McCrea Jr.
