Kuemper catholic High School students got a close-up look on Friday at the potentially life-changing effects of poor choices at prom.

Firefighters and emergency medical technicians cut a 180-pound manikin from the driver's seat of a bashed-up car, strapped it to a backboard and loaded it into an ambulance to simulate the work they do after serious crashes.

They hoped to show the students the dangers of driving recklessly or intoxicated. Prom was on Saturday.

"All these kids are driving vehicles they're not used to, some of them high-performance vehicles," said Pat Gray, director of Carroll County Ambulance Service, who also talked to the Kuemper senior class on Thursday about the dangers of drinking and driving. "It only takes that one split-second to change everything."

Gray said his department was not called to any prom-related crashes over the weekend.

Gray and Fire Chief Greg Schreck also used the crash scene to demonstrate what each department does, hoping that some of the graduating seniors will consider volunteering with the fire department or taking classes to become a paramedic. Gray said it was the first time they've staged a crash at the school.

"We hope that it sticks in their minds," Schreck said, "to see what happens when we need to extricate people from a vehicle."

Quandt Auto Salvage donated the vehicle for the simulation.
