When love comes by way of chance and takes both by surprise, no ordinary wedding will do.

Amber Lhotka and Robert Rogers of Carroll have decided Las Vegas will be the perfect place to celebrate their love and good fortune of a whirlwind romance.

On Feb. 25, 2016, Amber and Robbie met through a mutual friend one night after work. The two immediately hit it off and began talking. By 9 the next morning they realized they’d spent the entire night driving aimlessly around Carroll.

“We had accidentally, incredibly, spent the entire night talking,” said Amber.

Amber felt an immediate connection to Robbie and couldn’t wait to share her feelings.

“I called my mom and my best friends and told them all that I had met the man that I would eventually marry. I had never felt so strongly about anybody I had ever known — and especially not so quickly,” explained Amber.

Over the next few days, Amber and Robbie called, texted and spent time together.

On Feb. 29, after knowing each other for only four days, Robbie asked Amber to be his girlfriend.

“We both knew that we were destined to build a life together — a modern-day version of love at first sight,” said Amber.

Amber is a 2013 graduate of Carroll High School and is the daughter of Jason and Jodi Lhotka of Carroll. Amber earned her associate’s degree in human services at Des Moines Area Community College. She was a manager at Charlie’s Steakhouse until December 2017 before starting her new career as a staffing coordinator at New Hope.

Robert is the son of Tim Rogers and Christine Rogers. He graduated from Ar-We-Va High School in 2011 and then served in the National Guard until 2016. Currently Robbie is working to complete an associate’s degree in financial administration at Des Moines Area Community College in Carroll with plans to transfer to Buena Vista University. Besides attending school full time he works at Charlie’s Steakhouse as a server and bartender.

On the morning of Aug. 1, 2017, Amber was surprised to wake up to Robbie’s smiling face. At first, she couldn’t understand what was happening until he pulled out a ring from behind his back and asked, “Amber Nicole Lhotka, will you marry me?” Amber said yes as happy tears flowed from her eyes.

Amber and Robbie had originally planned a traditional wedding and put down deposits for all of their vendors. After a deep conversation they decided they would prefer a smaller, more personal ceremony with only immediate family in attendance. The two consider themselves to be an unconventional couple for many reasons. They began dating on a day that comes only every four years, they worked side by side for almost two years and they have an unspoken, surreal connection to each other. They felt a traditional wedding just wasn’t right for them and decided a destination wedding in Sin City was the perfect place to say “I do” with their families by their sides.

“We decided that family was the thing that we cared most about in this wedding planning journey, so we decided to do something that would be intimate, yet fun with them,” Amber said.

The couple have selected the Wraparound Terrace Suite at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas as the ceremony location on Feb. 28, 2019. The private suite provides a panoramic view of the city. They are looking forward to exchanging vows in a small, intimate ceremony on a beautiful balcony in front of their families.

The idea of getting married in Vegas is fun and romantic for Amber and Robbie. After they exchange vows they’ve written themselves, they will celebrate the night away by taking a private limousine tour around the city with their families while sipping champagne to celebrate their marriage.

Amber and Robbie plan to spend a few days in Las Vegas after the wedding, but are also hoping to honeymoon in Jamaica. Last year they fell in love with Couples Tower Isle and have been wanting to return to Jamaica to relive those relaxing days on a sunny beach.

For some couples, love grows slowly and over time. For others, it happens in a heartbeat.
