COON RAPIDS - Coon Rapids-Bayard High School senior Will Pingrey has earned an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Pingrey, 18, a son of Ken and Julie Pingrey of Coon Rapids, received nominations from all three of his federal representatives in Washington, D.C. - U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, U.S. Sen. Charles Grassley, R-Iowa, and U.S. Rep. Steve King, R-Kiron. Harkin's office notified Pingrey of the appointment Friday.

"It's unbelievable," Will Pingrey said. "Nothing could be better. It's one of the best educations America offers."

Pingrey, who maintains a 3.82 grade-point average at Coon Rapids-Bayard, is a member of the National Honor Society, the Student Advisory Council, the Mentoring Program, chorus, and Spanish Club. He participated in American Legion Boys State and is class treasurer, a position he has held for four years. He also participated in mock trial, Olympic Weightlifting, football, trapshooting and swimming.

The appointment fills a long-held goal for Pingrey.

"I've wanted to be in the military ever since I was a little kid," Pingrey said.

Pingrey spoke to the Daily Times Herald Monday night after completing a workout and training session. He is a competitive weight lifter and plans to run track in the spring to prepare for the Academy.

"I've been hitting it hard, to say the least," Pingrey said.

Pingrey is reviewing West Point orientation materials now and says he will be at the Academy in New York state for basic training in the summer.
