Badding lands largest project in rich history
Carroll contractor leads $19.7 million remodel and expansion of Storm Lake High School
October 17, 2013
The Storm Lake High School project will involve additions as well as remodeling of the full existing high school.
Badding Construction has embarked on the single-largest building project in its 60-year history - a period in which the firm has constructed dozens of landmarks in western and central Iowa.
School board members in Storm Lake on Oct. 9 awarded Carroll-based Badding the $19.7-million remodeling-and-renovation project for Storm Lake High School.
"We're excited that Badding got the contract," said Storm Lake Superintendent Dr. Carl Turner.
The project includes the addition of 750-seat auditorium, the construction of a new science center, ninth-grade wing, auxiliary gym and renovation of the entire current high school, built in 1962.
"Every part of the high school will be touched in some way," Turner said.
Badding's bid came in about $1 million lower than a competing one from Woodruff Construction of Ames, Turner said.
The high school project bundles mechanical, electrical and general construction work.
"It's great work for our crew and our people," said Nick Badding, president of Badding Construction. "I'm excited for our people."
Badding said the auditorium in particular is a visually striking facility.
The successful bid means work for local subcontractors as well, Badding noted. For example, Drees Co. of Carroll will be doing the electrical work on the school.
Construction could start as soon as this fall with an expected completion date in January 2016.
Turner said one of the challenges will be managing construction with ongoing classes.
"We have to do it in phases because the kids will still be going to school," Turner said.
Storm Lake Community School District taxpayers are funding the project through local-option sales-tax revenues and an increase to the physical plant and equipment levy.
