The Carroll Chamber of Commerce is prepping for its colorful annual run.

The Chamber will hold its third annual Color Fun Run on Saturday, June 9.

“Each year the Chamber has worked to build on this event, and in 2018 we’ve added a few things we think our attendees will really enjoy, including some pre-run Zumba and the Carroll County Fresh Tour Truck,” Chamber Program Director Sarah Foley said in a news release.

The 5K walk and run will loop around Swan Lake on the paved recreation trail.

“These events are always called ‘runs,’ but we want people to know that this event is truly designed for people of all ages and abilities,” Foley said in the release. “In past years, we’ve had strollers, families, avid runners and athletes and even a family pet participate in this event.”

Registration for the event is $30 for adults and $20 for children ages 6 through 12. Kids ages 5 and under can participate at no charge. Registration can be done online,

Advance registration is encouraged so that participants are guaranteed a T-shirt, but day-of registration is available as well for the same price.

Day-of registration starts at 8:30 a.m. at the Swan Lake State Park East Shelterhouse, which is also where participants will end their run or walk.

Participants will receive a white event T-shirt — to help capture the color — and a participant goodie bag.

Before the run, Michelle Prichard will lead interested participants in several Zumba activities, beginning near the East Shelterhouse at 8:45 a.m. The Carroll County Wellness Fresh Tour Truck will also be onsite to talk about healthful nutrition.

A 9 a.m. start will be geared toward runners and those wanting to time themselves, and a 9:05 a.m. start will follow for those interested in walking or just enjoying the day, according to the release.

Once they get started, participants will make their way through six color stations, at which sponsors will throw a corn starch-based color powder into the air.

“The powder will color the runners, leaving them looking like rainbows of color by the end of the route,” the release states.

Each of the six color zones are sponsored and staffed by area businesses: Anytime Fitness, American Home Shield, Bank of the West, Des Moines Area Community College’s Carroll Campus, Johnston Communications and Motor Inn of Carroll.

At the end of the route, Anytime Fitness of Carroll and Hy-Vee will provide runners with fresh fruit, and Bomgaars will have bottled water available.

Vinegar spray bottles will be available at the shelterhouse for those interested in preserving the color on their shirts. The vinegar spray helps to seal the color powder onto the shirt and prevent it from being washed away.

In addition to the color zone sponsors, event sponsors include: Brown’s Shoe Fit, Buena Vista University, Computer Concepts of Iowa, Cricket Wireless, Family Resource Center, First American Home Warranty, Jimmy John’s, Lenz Insurance and RE/MAX Professional Realty, McFarland Clinic, Next Generation Chiropractic, Pella Corp. — Carroll Operations, Pepsi Co., Piranha Club, Smithfield Foods, Soppe Chiropractic, The Graphic Edge and United Bank of Iowa.
