MANNING - Maybe it was just their crowd. Or the way they looked that night.
Keely Schreck of Carroll and Nate Fara of Manning, an engaged couple, fox-trotted and swing-danced to victory Saturday night in Manning Rotary Club's third annual Dancing With the Stars fundraiser. Competing against four other duos, Fara, who works at FAC Farmers Cooperative in Arcadia, and Schreck, who is with Carroll Area Child Care Center, danced the fox trot to Harry Connick's "The Way You Look Tonight" and showcased swing moves to "Let's Hear It for the Boys" from the movie "Footloose."
The event, held at the Hausbarn, drew a crowd of more than 300 people and raised $4,000 for a variety of good works through the Manning Rotary - including local scholarships, support of LifeServe Blood Center and American Red Cross blood drives, Highway 141 cleanup and Rotary youth leadership.
When the votes were counted at the end of the evening, one that included a lavish buffet dinner, Schreck and Fara emerged with the most votes, said lead organizer Geri Spies, a Manning Rotarian who developed the concept for the localized take-off of the popular national network show.
"I think people like seeing local talent," said Jean Behrens, a Manning Rotarian.
The $25 tickets, available in person at local businesses for in-person purchase only, sold out in 25 minutes one morning in late January, Spies said. Next year's Dancing With the Stars already is scheduled for Feb. 15 at the Hausbarn. Don Luensmann of Aspinwall and Chantelle Grove of Manning were emcees. Allison Ohde, Kevin Boyle and Dr. Robert Vonnahme of Manning served as celebrity judges.
Spies credited Susan Glass, an exercise training professional with substantial experience in dance, with providing seven weeks of consultation to the contestants.
In attendance Saturday night were Rotary International District 6000 Governor Terry Geiger and his wife, Peggy, of Leon, as well as District Governor-elect Loring Miller and his wife, Phyllis, of Leon.
Other couples competing in Manning's Dancing With the Stars were:
- Elissa Riesberg, who works at First National Bank in Manning, and Jason Klocke, a farmer. They danced swing to "Die Young" by Kesha and rhumba to "I've Had the Time of My Life" from the movie "Dirty Dancing."
- Colleen Nelson, Main Street Manning director, and her husband, Jeff Nelson, manager of the Aspinwall Cooperative. They danced two-step to "Forever and Ever, Amen" by Randy Travis and polka to "Happy Norwegian" by Lawrence Welk.
- Dustin Christensen, a first-grade teacher in Audubon Community Schools, and Miranda Irlmeier, who works at St. Anthony Regional Hospital. They danced tango to "Valentine's Dance" from the movie "Another Cinderella Story" and two-step "What Was I Thinkin'" by Dierks Bentley.
- Eric and Jodi Ramsey. Eric is with Council Office & Document in Harlan, and Jodi is an independent contractor in occupational therapy. They danced tango to "Hernando's Hideaway" and disco to "We Are Family" by Sister Sledge. Four of their five children discoed in the last dance - Luke, Nolan, Eryn and Benjamin.
