Kuemper graduate running for Iowa House in Story County district

Nevada educator Kevin Ericson of Maxwell, a Kuemper Catholic High School graduate, announced this morning that he will run for the Iowa House in the new District 49, which includes most of Story County outside of Ames and the southern part of Hardin County.
“As a special-education teacher, I’ve dedicated my life to helping kids succeed. We need to make sure every child in Iowa gets the skills they need to continue their education and get a good-paying job,” said Ericson, a Democrat.
Ericson has taught in the Nevada Community School District for 15 years and is an active member of the Nevada Community Education Association, supporting teachers at all grade levels. His wife, Gina, is a kindergarten teacher in Collins-Maxwell.
“The divisive politics of Washington have become all too common in Des Moines. I’ll listen to the people of Story and Hardin Counties, put politics aside, and work together to find compromise,” added Ericson. “We need to grow Iowa’s middle class and put people back to work.”
Ericson and his wife have one daughter, Abbigail. He grew up in Carroll and graduated from Kuemper High School and Briar Cliff College. After working in the business world for many years, Ericson returned to college and graduated from the University of Northern Iowa before beginning his teaching career at Nevada.
Ericson and his family are members of St. Patrick Catholic Church, where he serves on the parish council and has taught religious education and baptism classes.
