Proposal in paradise: He pops question on Hawaii trip
January 31, 2012
Matt Donaldson and Holly Lengeling.
In April 2011, after a courtship of almost two years, Matt Donaldson took Holly Lengeling, a 2005 Kuemper Catholic High School graduate, on a trip to Hawaii.
The couple arrived at their destination, the Turtle Bay Resort, site of the movie, “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.” As they were walking the hotel grounds, Matt dropped to one knee and asked Holly to be his wife. Matt had prearranged for their friends, Jon and Jamie Lewton (originally from Iowa), to hide in the bushes and snap pictures of the proposal. Jon and Jamie were also on hand with a bottle of champagne and celebrated with the couple afterwards.
Holly is a cosmetologist at Capella Salon in Clive and is a daughter of Ron and Vicky Lengeling, of Carroll. Matt is a 2001 graduate of Johnston High School and works for Papa John’s Pizza of Iowa, as an operator of locations in Des Moines and Ames. His parents are Tom and Kim Donaldson of Johnston.
Holly and Matt have planned their wedding day to take place on July 7, 2012. The ceremony will be at St. Ambrose Catholic Cathedral downtown Des Moines. The reception will be held in the atrium of Capitol Square at Nollen Plaza.
Holly is planning a modern romantic feel for their wedding. She is tying together neutral tones with shades of gold. Holly’s five bridesmaids will wear shimmery champagne-colored gowns. The atrium will be draped in fabric to provide a soft and flowing effect for the reception.
On the most important day of their lives, Holly and Matt want to be sure to include all of their family and friends. They have chosen to incorporate many of their family members into the roles for the ceremony. They have selected a large wedding party including eight bridesmaids, eight groomsmen, along with four ring bearers, and one flower girl. Holly’s sisters, Kim and Missy, will serve as matron of honor and maid of honor, respectively.
Holly’s mother, Vicky Lengeling, and her grandmother Vera Sporrer of Carroll are planning a very special surprise for Holly and Matt. They are baking and decorating Holly and Matt’s wedding cake. Holly says, “I can’t wait to see how beautiful it’s going to look!”
After their big day, Holly and Matt will return to the tropics. For their honeymoon, they are flying over 6,000 miles to the South Pacific to the Tahitian Islands. They will be staying on the island of Moorea for their first leg of their honeymoon before heading to the island of Bora Bora.
The couple had been wishing to visit French Polynesia and figured their honeymoon was the perfect opportunity. Holly and Matt can’t wait to relax in their seaside bungalow with a private deck and beach. They will swim with dolphins, turtles, and sting rays, kayak, and soak up the sun.
